2017 CVO's and aftermarket wheels...
« on: July 16, 2017, 09:51:45 AM »

So, am contemplating trading my '15 CVO SG in on a '17 model, but there's apparently a question with my dealer as to whether I can swap my PM aftermarket wheels from my '15 over to the '17, partly because of the new TPMS system on the new ones. This would be a deal breaker for me if they cannot swap. Anyone with experience with this issue, I'd be greatful for insight.

It's just a sensor that goes inside the tire, I believe it is taped to the rim. Should be just like on a car. A buddy of mine but aftermarket rims on his Silverado and put the sensors on the new rims and took it to the dealer to have them linked to the truck. I would think it would work the same on the bike.

I would think pm would know if the 2017 tpms sensors would be compatible with their wheels.  have you tried contacting them?

Sensors are part of the valve stem assembly.  Not just taped on.  The sensor is inside the wheel.  What makes some wheels work and some not is that there needs to be at least a small flat mating area on the wheel surface for the valve stem to mount against (on the outside).  If it's entirely rounded it won't seal.

That leaves the question hanging on the new PM wheels.  Is the area of the wheel where the valve stem goes through entirely rounded or oval or is there a flat mating area there?  Agreed with the above; it's an obvious thing that PM should easily be aware of if asked (if you can't tell from looking).

Thanks for the help guys...I kinda figured it was just a matter of buying a pair of sensors from HD, and installing...or worst case scenario, not putting the sensors on at all, and simply programming out or not using the feature. Been riding for 45 years without TPMS.

Why not call PM and ask them?

Are you running an oversize diameter front wheel?  If so, TPMS would be less of a problem than possible issues with the  linked ABS.  As for the TPMS, if you look at the stock rims they have a pocket cast at the valve stem hole to make room for the stem mounted sensor.  Running the same stem and sensor on a rim without that pocket, especially if running a low profile tire, could lead to sensor damage when mounting and removing tires or if the tire goes flat.  Check with the  folks at PM.

Further info that I found if any of you are considering running aftermarket wheels on the '16 or newer models with TPMS, And have already purchased your wheels before you buy the bike. I spoke with Wannaryde yesterday, and they will take your wheels and mill out a section of the inside of the rim, and install TPMS sensors and ship back to you all for $350...if you are in the same boat I am. Personally, I probably will justvride with using the TPMS, at least until winter, then maybe take off wheels and send them to be done.

Decided to hold on to my'15 at least until I see what the '18's have to offer. In the mean time, anyone have pics of their 17's with aftermarket wheels??
