New Harley Owner. Radio Question
« on: July 19, 2017, 02:36:20 PM »

Hello everyone. I have always been a Honda guy but bought my 1st Harley 2007 Electa Glide 2 days ago 10K miles and am loving it. Still kicking myself for not being a Harley owner 30 yrs ago. Anyway, here's my question.

As far as I know it has the stock radio in it. I've read the manual, watched YouTube, and read many posts trying to figure out a few things about the radio. Nothing seems to work for me. 1st, I'm trying to get the AVC to work. When I push the volume button in, nothing happens. The volume itself increases and decreases but I can not enter any menu settings (bass, treble, avc etc). Sometimes it seems like the volume increases and decreases with speed so is this radio just automatically set to a standard setting therefore I can not control it. If it is the stock radio shouldn't I still be able to enter the menu items? I've read where others have had the same problem and one post said stock radios may not have this option.

Also, do I need the helmet adapters to use the cb radio? The owner was an old man and he seemed to think you could just push the button and talk while u were riding without anything hooked up. Also, I set the cb to on and it would let me increase the squelch but not decrease it. Now it went all the way to the right and says squelch closed. I can not decrease it back down.

I've never owned a bike with a radio so although these questions may seem simple, they are driving me crazy trying to figure things out. So, any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Also, being prior military, I'd like to set the clock to 24 hr time. I've tried everything the manual says and it will not let me do that either. It also has the navigation option but that is not installed. How do I get that installed and how much will it cost? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just an excited Harley owner now and I want it all. Lol.

you should be able to enter the menu to adjust bass, treble, fade, avc, and display.  the same button on the left grip that you toggle up or toggle down to adjust the volume is the same button.  you just press it straight in.  if it isn't going into the menu, then I would say you have a problem with your switch.  if you just bought it from a dealer, tell him to fix it.  it isn't a 'stock' radio problem.  my wife's stock radio doesn't have any of those issues.

you don't want the nav option.  it is disc based and uses the same low def display for the radio and really isn't worth any money you would spend on it, if you could even find it.  it may be obsolete (one can hope).

you are going to need a headset to use the cb.  the ultra should have come with at least 1 (they may have come with two that far back, not sure).

welcome to the hd world.

Thank you. Yes. I tried exactly everything you have said for 2 days now. Volume works great. Even the avc is working as I ride but unable to enter the menu. I don't have a Harley dealer nearby but I'm taking a trip soon so I'm sure I'll pass a few on the way. I'll stop in and have them look at it.

I see what ur talking about with the nav system. Think I'll leave that out also. I'll also check with the prior owner and see if he has the cb headset equipment. Thanks for your input.

Also talked to a guy who hates Harleys for some reason. He says they are always breaking down on the side of the road. Any truth to this? I know this one rides like a dream. I'm sure it's jealousy. Lol. Thanks for the input.

Well I downloaded the diagnostic book for the radio and got into the menu. Code under avc says B2008 FC2 pin 23-8 short to ground. I wouldn't have a clue how to take anything apart and check it. I am an electronic technician so the electrical troubleshooting won't be a problem, but getting to the switch, I have not idea where to start taking things apart to check. Is it a simple check? If so, I would need a detailed explanation of what to take off. Thanks

not to sound like a douche, but you really need to get the service manual for your bike.  get the official hd one, not the Clymer.  if you buy it from a discount dealer, you should be able to pick it up for around $50.  boardtracker is a popular one, myself I order from hornytoad hd.  just email jon.horton@hornytoadhd.com with your request.  I've never removed a batwing fairing before so I can't help you with that.  gotta be easier than a shark though :D

if you go to the Harley service information portal, https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/ you can put in your vin and pull up the wiring diagram, as well as parts manual for your bike.  if you register as an 'independent operator' you can sign in and pull up owner's manuals, parts manuals, etc. for any bike.

good luck, I hate electrical gremlins

I had a few issues with my 2007 radio.  First was fixed under factory warranty, but  had additional issues later on that I had to deal with myself.  I found Iron Cross Audio online and they were awesome!  They can do repairs, exchanges, upgrades, etc.  I was very happy with them, and they also have their own 1 year warranty.

On a separate note, when I bought the bike, I had the XM module added, and also the factory navigation.  XM was great, no issues, loved it!  Factory navigation was okay for what it was (one disc for Eastern US, one for Western US, Canada coverage was VERY limited, and it used the radio display for rudimentary left turn, right turn and go straight symbols, but it did give audio prompts).  They only ever did one map update to the original, and even then they wanted something like $400-$600 for the discs.  Having had that "feature", then the Garmin Roadtech Zumo 660 factory installed on the 2012 and then the built-in nav on the 2017, I prefer the Garmin option hands down over anything Harley has ever tried to come up with.  You can easily add the Garmin unit to your bike, and it comes with a car kit so you get double use.  You can get the mounting kit from Harley, and then find the actual GPS unit elsewhere at a better price.

If it's a factory radio you can do this to get it to military time - Turn ignition on & press/hold the function switch until 12 HR begins to flash, press/release function switch once to 24 HR.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm probably just going to head to the Harley shop with a friend. He goes there a couple times a month. As far as the 24 hour clock, where is the function switch? Nothing is marked function switch. The avc works great and the radio settings are perfect so I really don't need to change anything, it's just frustrating not being able to get into the menu and I don't feel comfortable taking things apart right now. But thanks again. Never owned any bike this fancy before. I'll figure it all out one day hopefully.

Don't worry to much as far as realibility goes. Most people that makes negative comments are just haters that really don't know anything first hand. I have to admit that our HDs are not the most reliable out there, but most issues are well known.

In around 200,000 miles I have only been stranded once. (On a 2003 Road King) and that was the voltage regulator that said goodbye in the middle of the night.

For GPS I suggest get a Garmin (or the HD branded Garmin) and mount to the fairing. If I recall there is a mount for the fairing for your bike. I did install one on my 2010 Ultra. You can route the voice into the system via the aux. port if you like.

Thanks. Yall have been a great help. Another question. I've noticed my oil gauge goes to almost 0 when I doling but when I get up to speed it climbs to 3/4 full and stays there. The oil stick says full. Is this normal? Sorry for the ignorance. Just never owned anything this fancy and really want to take care of it.

Knock on wood, only been stranded once, broken throttle cable on a '99 Road King. HD's are as reliable as most everything else, car or bike.  Haters will hate.  Never any issues with my '08 Ultra or my '16 CVO RGU.  Unfortunately, your oil pressure observation is dead on.  My '08 did the exact same thing.  It was a tad better when I dumped the HD Syn3 for Amsoil, AND it ran cooler and quieter.

Thanks. That makes me feel better. I'll probably ask a lot of crazy questions in the next few months. Do u do ur own oil changes and is there an oil filter to change? I'm sure it's all in the manual but I enjoy getting input here. I here every 5k you should change the oil. Going on my 1st trip Aug 12th to GA 12 Aug. We're having a bike ride for a deputy that was shot and killed in the line of duty at the sheriff dept I worked at for 10 yrs. Looking forward to it. About 700 miles 1-way. Thanks again.

I fully disagree with your statement in bold.  I have run several GMC trucks well over 150K miles, A Range rover over 100K, a Xterra over 200K.  The Nissan Xterra is the only one that ever left me stranded, that happened at 218,xxx miles, harmonic balancer failed.  Nissan paid half the repair bill.

I am a Harley Fan.  I currently have two CVO's and a Fatboy, plus my wife has two.  I have had Five CVO's.

09 SERG, Failed compensator, then Failed lifer at 46K miles while at dealership, required rebuild.

12 SERG Voltage regulator failed at 6K miles, left me stranded in IN on a Sunday.  No dealer open with in 300 miles.  Hydraulic clutch master cylinder failed with just over 12K on it, stranded again.  Compensator failed.

13 SERK, no failures, but I rebuilt the engine at 1500 miles with better parts.  So far no issues.

15 SERGU.  Water pump failure, Catastrophic lifter failure at 44K miles, required a new engine

17 SESG, 18K miles, so far so good

I have never had a car or truck that has had lifter failure, or other drive train failure.  Nor a regulator failure at less than 50K miles.

All most all my trucks and SUV's have gone over 150K before I have had mechanical failures.

That said, I have yet to find a motorcycle I like better than my CVO's.

Would look hard at BMW bagger if they had a lager dealer network.
