Will the Rushmore single lever saddlebags fit pre-Rushmore bikes?

I was wondering about my '09 SERG if Rushmore bags would use the same lower mounting rail and have a similar back two pin alignment?

You have to adjust the front bracket about half an inch from what I've read. Everything else is good.

The big difference is the two attachment bolts inside the saddlebag.  The older ones are 1/4-turn twist bolts and the new ones are full screw-in bolts.  You might have to make some adjustments with the rubber grommets that the bolts pass through if you wanted to use the old-style.  There are kits pretty cheap if you wanted to change to the new style mounting bolts.

I've done the switch over of the mounting screws from the quarter turn pins. the grommet holes on the bags are the same, the kit costs $50 and is worth a million bucks. No one is going to steal the bags and they won't come loose and pass you up as they slide on the pavement.

Up until this model year , '17, they still had the twist pins. My '15 came with them and I promptly changed those out to something more secure

yeah,  I've heard stories of that happening,  but I'm having a hard time understanding just how............I've had four different tour models......all with the quarter turn fasteners and never had a problem over the years with them coming loose.

Once you complete that quarter turn,  they just shouldn't pop loose

If I recall correctly it was a recall in 2014 to replace the 1/4 turn clips because the CVO bags came off.

I always switched to screws as soon as I got a new bike.

Yep you're right, they shouldn't come loose but, it's happened to members here and I personally had a couple come loose. Mine stayed with the bike though.

It also very easy to steal the bags with the spring clips. (With the bags looked). Takes a few seconds with a screw driver and they pop right off.

You heard correctly, the new style saddlebags will fit with only minor adjustments to the mounting points. I actually thought of doing this because I like the single latch release much better but then I  thought of the cost for more custom paint work to match the bags to the rest of the bike made me cringe.... So I'll just keep the originals.

Yeah,  I totally agree that the screw driver deal can pop off the (older) tour model bags,  but my 2014 S.G. Special,  has added a cover over the bag connectors behind the bags.............it would seem to me that this negates (stops........for those from rio linda)..........the quick ability to steal the bags.

I did the bolt conversion on my '09 SERG after I lost my left bag and didn't know it was gone.  I found it, but it was pretty bad shape with scratches etc.

Instead of using 5/16" bolts and the sheet metal slid on nuts, I used what I had in my parts drawers, 3/8".  They kind of thread through grommets.  I have a big fender washer on the inside and just slightly crush the grommet and they stay very tight.

At $1725 to replace just the left side, but that was factory painted to match.  Maybe raw with speakers would be a nice upgrade and I'd just get them painted to match.  I could keep the originals to sell with the bike if I ever want to sell or trade in.

Thanks again.  I basically sounds like the newer bags will work with very minor tweaks, just what I wanted to know.

Hi Guys, regarding saddlebag retention. When I first read about this issue a few years ago I was debating about changing to one of the bolt on kits that some of the guys were using. Instead I just use 4 zip ties on each side at the part where the saddlebag attaches to the bike. I can cut them off in a couple of seconds if I need to get my bags off and I still have the convenience of the twist and lock pins.  I keep extra ones in my saddle bags incase I am out of the area and need to remove bag. If the saddle bag is locked I figured the thieves would have to break into it to get at the bolts and ruin it anyways. I feel very secure with the zip ties. If anyone wants a picture I will be happy to add one. Can't really tell they are there. As my dear old Dad used to say " A lock cannot keep a thief out it will only keep an honest man honest" CAHDBIKER

The only concern I would have with leaving in the 1/4 turn twist retaining pins is that when my bag let loose, the ends of the pins were both bent as they pulled away from the inner wire.  I my gut says that even with the cable ties, my bag would still have came loose.

In my mind, some type of a solid bolt/retainer is still the best approach.
