2015 CVO Limited....Not sure what I'm doing wrong but my gps seems to want me to go to roads or lanes that just don't make sense. Tried fastest/Shortest and played with avoidances with no luck. Any tips? My Zumo worked alot better.

I don't have a Harley system, but even with regular Garmin units I've found over the years they often come up with stupid routes if left to do their own thing.  If you are planning a trip ahead of time, the best way to make sure you go the way you want is by adding waypoints to force the unit to go where you want.  As far as just putting in a destination and getting the route you want automatically, I'm not aware of any settings in any of the various units that could possibly give you what you want every time.

I think it is all about getting to know the system and how it will react to different situations.  I was spoiled by the Garmin on my 2012 CVO and also used it in my car for work, so it became very comfortable.  Before that, I had a TomTom and hated the Garmin when I first switched.  In time, the built-in navigation might just grow on you.

One thing I hated with the Garmin was when I navigated to a specific location and once there, told it to go home and it would take me back a completely different route.  Other times, it would send me on a route that would take me 90 minutes longer than a route I knew, despite having it set for fastest route.

Although I have been using the nav locally to learn it's idiosyncrasies, I don't typically use the nav except for long trips.  For those, I plot a route using MyRouteApp with waypoints that forces the bike on the route I want and have had good success.

Problem I have with the built in gps is even when I put waypoints to force it to roads it still wants to  short cut on very minor roads which for some reason it thinks is faster than continuing on to the next intersection and turning on the selected road. And yes I verified it is set to fastest time. It has put me on some very shall we say interesting roads before I figured out what was happening. On a long route it just isn't feasible to zoom in to the degree that you would see every possible contingency. My Garmin is much, much better in this regard. I simply have no confidence in the built in GPS.

I agree, I create a simple trip on the Ride Planner, and when I import the trip into the bike it changes my route.

Guess its time to watch some of Ryan Urlachers Boombox videos.

The factory system on the 14 and newer bikes really does come up with strange routes when set to Fastest.  I was near Brenton TN, and told it to take me home fastest route.  I knew a couple good was to go as its only a 45 mile trip.  I was 15 miles from home before it put my on roads I had ever been on.  I know all the state roads between the two points.  I was running me down county roads, and lanes, some were only a one car road, if one going the opposite direction you had to pull off.

Not sure how they come up with routing, but I sure do not trust it.  It will get you there, but not by normal roads or routes.  The trip above took ten minutes longer than if I took the routes I knew.

I have it set to avoid dirt roads, seasonal roads and have had it route me down them too.

You should try the MYROUTE APP it works and works well. There are plenty of threads on here about it. It is the proven winner.

Yup.  That's the TYRE online service.  It works great.  I found out about it last year when I went to re-download TYRE for a new computer.  It redirected me to myrouteapp.com .  I just still call it TYRE for some reason.  :)   Thanks.

I do not think the mapping software is truly the issue. Using routes created in MapSource, BaseCamp and Ride Planner have all had these problems. Route is A-OK when reviewing it on the computer but Harley's GPS interprets if differently. While I'm sure My Route is a fine app I do doubt it will solve all the aforementioned problems with the Harley GPS

All sounds like a lot of hassle compared to using a good Garmin on the handlebars....  :huepfenlol2:

That it is. That's why I have a Garmin RT 590 on my handlebars and gave up on the Harley GPS.

590 is what I've got too Jerry.  Once in a great while she just goes stupid.  But all in all an easy to use and reliable unit.  Goes back and forth from bikes to car seamlessly as well.

You use its TPMS function?

Well the only thing I will add is that Harry built about 17 routes for the GTG and I and bunch of others loaded and used them and I don't think anyone had a problem with them and they were all done in the MYROUTE APP.

I am in the market for a 2018 but my dealer already knows unless there has been a total revamp of the infotainment system by HD don't even call me!  I read all the steps folks take to try and make it work properly and shake my head for what we are paying for these things.  2014 based electronics in todays world are dinosaurs.  Automotive manufactures do it why can't HD.  It's part of the total package of the bike and I don't care if you use it or not it should meet "todays" expectations not 2014's.  That includes their Ride Planner software.  Hoping they will surprise me with the 2018's.  Wishful thinking likely.

Unfortunately Fred, Harley is always way behind on the technology curve and I doubt that will change.  Every single time I can think of when they finally decided to take mature technology from the auto industry (and the motorcycle industry as well) and apply it to their bikes, they have managed to come out with seriously flawed systems.  I have questioned the engineering "talent" at Harley for a long time, and I haven't seen anything to make me change my opinion of them.

I have no idea who the vendor is on Harley's system, but I'm guessing they went with the cheapest system and vendor they could find.  One reason I never buy a factory navigation system on cars is that I've found over the years many companies have a "not invented here" aversion to just going with a system that many/most people already know, such as Garmin.  There should be no need to learn all over again how to use a GPS every time you buy or rent a different vehicle, and there definitely shouldn't be serious differences in how the system itself calculates routes.  Putting people on roads that are closer to trails than roads is not only stupid but can also be unsafe.
