Piston rings Q.
« on: August 24, 2017, 04:58:45 PM »

This winter I've got to pull the cylinder pots to replace the lower gaskets ( they're seeping) 2007 Ultra Classic
I thought since the pots are off I may as well do the rings.

I was wondering if there's a preferred piston rings or are HD rings sufficient?

Longlast,

Before I'd decide on rings I'd do a leakdown and compression test.  If you have compression releases remember to turn em off.  Once you have that data you will be in a better position to decide if you need to do a more thorough check :).  If I am re ringing I am prolly going 5 or 10 over and replacing the pistons.

Both bikes I am redoing have 3 mm rings and one of those are total seal.

Thanks Unbalanced,

I will be doing a compression check. I do know that I don't burn oil and I'm fairly confident the compression rings are good.
I was just thinking that seeing as I have the cylinders off I'd put new rings in.
There's a Total Seal UK here but I'm having troubles finding the right rings to order for my 07  btw the motor is stock.
I contacted my HD dealer they said they have discontinued rings for the CVO 07 Ultra and that you can only get a piston and rings kit now at a cost of £250.00 per cylinder.

Would you or anyone reading this know the piston and ring grove size of the stock pistons or part number for Total Seal Rings would be much appreciated.

The #1 ring, the compression ring, 'mates' to the cylinder walls. That happens when you break the motor in. If you swap that ring out without honing the cylinders you will very likely have issues with oil consumption and compression leakage afterwards.

If you're only swapping the oil control ring you are ok without doing any honing.

I would do all three compression, scraper and oil. I'm familiar with having to hone the bore on putting in new rings.
Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks Unbalanced,
I contacted Total Seal Rings they said I'd most likely be good to put the pots back using the same rings as I have no issues with the rings but if I would like to put in new ones they would accommodate me. They say they would need bore size and piston ring grove size.

As yet I haven't found anything about the piston ring grove or bore size of the stock 110.
Would you know that info?

I'll haven't as yet, but will check into Suburban Harley

Longlast,

I don't have it, sorry.   Hastings or Suburban might be able to fill you in.

You could leave the pistons in the cyls when you remove if its in good condition. Just pull up cyl until you can get wrist pin out. Easy install too

They look to be right for your 96" 2007??

From what I've found the 96" fits the 1584cc Electra Glide I'm just learning all this but would that not be the 103 motor? Not a 1800cc 110 :nixweiss:

1690 is 103.  1550 is 95.  Have to believe 96" is 1554
