I have been playing with my new 2820 and trying to learn about it...
today driving from Denver to C springs I deviated from the route it selected.... ( for those that know the area,,I25 was a CF) and was crossing over to Hwy 83 which parallels I25 south

it kept recalculating and trying to send me back to I 25 until I was well committed ( almost 3/4 of the way home).
any ideas on how it makes route recommendations? ( i have it selected for quickest route ) 
im concerned about when i get to BFE someplace and it sends me on a wild goose chase...

If it's anything like the Zumo, you need to check on the 'avoidances' section.  I have u-turns avoided, and unpaved roads.  You might have secondary roads selected as 'avoid.'  Then again, I could be full of crap.  I remember changing my 2620 last year like that.  Good luck!

All the Garmin's calulate the same. You need to change some parameters. It could be fastest to shortest, no toll roads, no U turns, etc. It's putting you back on the track that you programmed. In the menu option, change some thing and then hit reclaculate.

Sometimes your best option when it gets opinionated like that is the simplest one.  Just go back to "find" and tell it to go to your destination all over again.  Originally it's trying to go along its first selected course.  If you do it again it will figure a route to your destination from your new current location.  The other simple option is to add a via point along the route you're wanting to take.

I would do 2 things:
1.  Changing the preferences as others have stated might work.
2.  The other is a little more work.  When I do a route, I input my destination waypoint and put the unit in simulation mode to see how it wants to take me to the destination.  If I like the route chosen I am done.  If I don't, I add a couple intermediary waypoints on my preferred route which forces the Garmin to follow my route.

My Garmin (2720) and probably yours has an "auto re-calculate" option.  I turn this "off."

I put in waypoints to "make" the unit follow my selected route.  But I've noticed that if I deviate, go off route say for a gas / eat stop then the unit may think I have deviated and try to re-calculate.  If you have auto re-calculate turned off it will prompt you to re-calculate, Yes or No.  I just wait until I get back on my route and then tell it to re-calculate.  Should pick right back up as if you'd never deviated.

These things are great but they do EXACTLY what you tell them.  If you pick shortest route and you deviate a little it may "find" and new route that is 1/4 mile shorter and want to take you that way.  That's why I never let it auto re-calculate.

Did your 2820 come with the trained flea to walk across the screen and mark the route?  Don't forget the special Garmin Flea Chow to keep him healthy.

yes it did..but the pet store is out of flea chow...been having to feed him filet mignon and its killiing my chrome budget!!!

Scot...if I go off route to get gas or eat, whatever...she (her name is Jill, by the way) will recalculate with the auto-recalculate "on", but if you just go back the way you came, she'll recalculate again when you pick up where you left off.  She just runs her mouth a bit more when the auto function is on.  I want her to talk dirty to me in French or Italian or something, but I can't make her do that....

Have you discovered the put your finger on the screen and drag the map function?  You can also pick points doing that, though I would recommend that you stop to do so...

The Flea sometimes hops around radomly, so you have to spank it on occasion to let it know who's boss.  It likes it, especially if it's dressed up in a little french maid outfit....

yes, you should have got a torx...it's little bitty silver knurled piece that is only about 2" long and unscrews into two pieces to reveal the torx.  Make sure you didn't overlook it.

Check the Garmin accessory catalog for the "Flea Route Recalculating Master Controller."  It's another flea with whips and leather that tells the first one it's been a bad flea and does a better job of directing on the route you want during the recalculate function.  The Master Flea ONLY eats filet though.  So she'd be hell on the chrome budget all the time.
