Mileage -
« on: October 25, 2004, 04:32:46 PM »

Has anyone found a good way to improve the milage. I have had 3 SE's (both 04's and now an 05 FLHTCSE2 and none have done very well. About 160 miles per tank. I have a friend with the 03 RKSE and he can get 205 per tank.
On one of my 04's I installed the race tuner and the other I had a stage one download (the 103 standard download) and they were the same. I think this new 05 is strong running but about the samew on fuel. I have the true duel rhinhardt pipes with the SE breather and the stage one download. I need som distance for my type of ridding.

Any ideas?

With only limited sampling so far mine's doing approx 41 when on roads that force running in the 55-65 range.  Doing about 35-36 when on roads where it can run 80.  So I guess the best suggestion for increasing fuel economy is to ride slower  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] ?

tc2728 you're getting better than me on a tank of gas.  On my 01 Ultra Classic I used to get about 160 or 165 miles to a tank on the 04 SEEG I get about 140 miles to a tank.

Ride slower? You can't be serious.

Ok then, let me advise and extend my remarks to have said:

Well, you could ride slower, but finding a hellish tailwind is a lot more fun.

TC2728,

I can say that at first I was shocked that this heavy bike with a big engine did not get better gas mileage. When my bike was bone stock I noted 180 miles on about 4.7 gallons. When I installed the Power Commander along with the SE air cleaner and performance mufflers mileage went down to about 150 for the same tank of gas. I think the map I chose was a bit rich. Now I have taken off the Power Commander and am using the HD race tuner with the appropriate map and the bike is back to running a bit lean and I got 169 miles on 4.8 gallons. However, my riding has all been under 4000 rpm and 70 miles per hour as I am still breaking in the motor. I did notice that my Big Dog got better gas mileage once the engine was broken in, don't know if that will happen with this bike.

You are so right on the PC map being rich. I've gotten 41.5 riding below 65 but average about 36 -38 normally. Leaning out the mid range two bars helped a bit. Now I have also leaned out the low range 2 bars and am trying that. Strange that it starts better hot or cold now. I think Dynojet needs to fine tune the map for the 103.

kbiforce,

I am curious, what map are using on your PC? One they offer or a custom? I could only find a couple that were for a SE 103, so I chose m807-127 which is for a 03 road glide with a SE103,  SE air cleaner and a Vance and Hines 2 into 1 pro pipe. The m807-126 was for the same bike but with stock mufflers. These were the closest to my set up so I chose the one that would give more fuel.

I used the 126. I have the high flow and SE performance mufflers and it was still too rich. Now I think it's pretty close. Will have to recheck mpg.

Have somebody dyno tune the bike they will be able to adjust the air fuel mixture for you so you get optimum feul economy.  I have freedom pipe, screamin eagle air filter, and a power commander.  When running with a group 60-75mph get 48mpg,  when I'm on it alot or push the speed it drops to 37-40mpg.

With my history and thanks to everyone for their input, I think I will stay where I am. If I were going to make any change I would go back to the HD Race tuner and get someone to Dyno it.

Thank to everyone for your input!

You could always try a one of these.  I know a guy that put one on and is very happy with it.  It is a little pricy, but not having to dyno tune your bike will save some of the costs over a race tuner.

These guys keep pushing the release date back for a product that will work with the 04 electronics (I called them in May they told me it would be available in July) I wouldn't want to be the first kid on the block with a faulty product and a company that tells me the update/patch is just around the corner (that corner could be months away)

My '03 SERK would be 40 miles past dry at 205 miles. Avg. 32-33 mpg at 3000-3500rpm. Best ever 37.5, worst 28.2. 2001 RK got 40-41 under same conditions.
