My First Week With The 05 SEEG
« on: October 31, 2004, 10:21:14 AM »

Just a summary of my experiences with the new bike and some add on parts. Just remember all of my observations are personal taste and/or preference. Over all I am pleased with the bike so far. I was not used to a bike with floor boards and that is taking some getting used to. Also the position that the floor boards put me in caused my knees to hurt but after adding highway pegs I think that part is taken care of. I have no problem with the factory seat so far. I had the Screamin' Eagle one piece mufflers installed with the A.C. kit and the race tuner and the bike runs fine but is a little on the rich side getting 39 mpg on the first two tanks.  I ditched the air shocks and am really pleased with the Progressive 440 heavy duty shocks and the ride of the bike. I installed Sirius satellite radio with the antenna mounted on top of the factory radio. under the fairing and it works perfectly. I did use a larger antenna than the one that came with the little tuner that I bought. I also took a simple route with the tuner for the Sirius and just dropped it into a windshield pouch. This made for an easy installation. I also tried the tune trapper and in my case found that it did not receive near as well as the factory whip, especially on the weather channel, so it got left off and the whip is still working. This could be due to my location here in the NC mountains. I also tried upgrading the speakers, with the same result, leaving the factory speakers working in the end.  I installed the Kuryakin LEDs in the turn signals and tail light along with the run, turn, brake module and HD security friendly load equalizer and am really pleased with the whole setup. This is the replacement, not the Panacea setup and before you reply, I did order a tail light LED insert from Radiantz and compared the two. It is brighter but the overall build quality appears more like home built, and the warranty is not as good. Just my personal preference but I like the Kuryakin better.  I changed the windshield three times so far. I first used an 8" from Fastaire, then a 10" Fastaire, and now I have the 12" with flames from HD. Being 6'1" the first one I was satisfied with was the 10" Fastaire and will still use it, trading out with the flamed 12". I also installed the fairing wind deflectors and the comfort profile rear crash bars, and am pleased with both. I also installed the locking glove box doors from Eglide Goodies and am pleased with them.
In summary I love the bike, the paint quality is excellent, and I am pleased with the ride and performance, and am sure I will be even more pleased after my dyno guru gets finished with it.

Good to hear RRSteve that you are happy with the new bike,  sounds like you have been busy personalizing it what fun.  You may want to try the floorboard spreaders to help with the floor boards. And of coarse have to raze you.   [smiley=worthless.gif] lets see it decked out.

Steve,
In amongst your shopping list was the wind deflectors.  Did you put them on immediately or can you offer a bit of before-and-after?  As the weather has gotten cooler they're something I've been thinking about.

Thanks.

Steve, thanks for posting your first impressions and what an impressive list of upgrades done within the first week (especially the three windshields, lol!).  Let us know how pleased you are with the Race Tuner dyno tuning and who did it for you.  I would be willing to travel to your area to have mine done by someone capable.

I installed the fairing air deflectors this fall and they do make a noticeable difference.  They take some of the draft off your elbows and torso.  Not a huge difference, but noticeable.  I put some electrical tape on the painted fairing so as not to scratch it while the deflectors are installed.  I'll take the deflectors and the tape off in the warmer weather.  Owners of other colors may want to use something different (clear packaging tape, maybe?) to keep the tape from sticking out against the color of the fairing.

Steve,

I had a hard time adjusting to the floorboards too as I felt cramped and I am only 5'9. Looks like you are setting up your ride to suite your style and needs. I am curious about your experience with the Kuryakyn run, turn, brake module. I wanted more light in the back so I installed the module and changed the turn indicator lenses to red opting not to change to LED at this time. The module worked fine but it created a buzzing noise in my speakers when the radio was on or off, but more noticable when it was off. Talked with tech support at Kuryakyn and they admitted it was a problem they were trying to fix but it would cause no harm to the bike's systems(suggested to wrap the module in tin foil). Curious if you have noticed the buzz. I exchanged units and still had the buzz. Took the suggestion from another thread and am going to try biketronics unit instead. Radiantz sells the unit but it is biketronics who makes it and it is about 12.00 cheaper if you buy it from them.

Enjoy your new ride,

Mark

I have the Biketronics unit and it works well, and is warrantied for life. The Kurakyn units created a buzz on a friend of mines Electra Glide Classic so yours is not the only one. He changed to Biketronics and has since had no problem. You can buy Biketronics accessories from any M/C shop, they are in Drag Specialities catalog and ALL shops buy from D/Spec's.  I paid $87.96 for my Tailbones unit (which also works with the alarm) at the local HD dealer.

Try Invisishield to protect the paint with the wind deflectors. If you will use the wind deflector to make you a template then cut the Invishield  to match you can leave it on year around. But you do need something, besides scratching the paint just from the wind flexing them, dust will gather behind the A/D's so you have to take them off to clean etc. Nice they are supplied with the knurled bolts. By the way, you can get this stuff, or a similar brand at any Trim Line Franchise or all of these new strip plaza sign shops.

DW6019,

Thanks for the feedback. I ordered the tailbones unit direct from biketronics and paid a little more than you but it is a done deal and should be here Monday. Talking with Mike from Biketronics he told me that the load equalizer was only necessary if you ran LEDs at both ends of the bike. Since I am not running LEDs at all I did not purchase it. How about you are you running the load balancer as they call it?

Yes I do have the load equalizer, I kept it off my RK when I sold it. I use the Radiantz lamp inserts and they (as all LED's) require the eq. Works slick, take off the seat, plug it in and forget it.

The wind deflectors did help some with the air that comes in under the upper fairing, although you still get some, I could tell a difference. I have the floor board spreaders already but have not got around to installing those yet. As for the run, turn, brake module, I didn't pick up any hum on my radio at all. I have also heard good things about the biketronics module and if I ever have a problem with the Kuryakin I will use one of theirs. So far mine works flawless. That makes me wonder if maybe it is a combination of parts that causes hum problem to show up with the RTB module. Mine has the flash feature for the brake lights and the only equalizer I used was the one that is recommended for Harleys with the security system. Other than it being a specific combination of parts, I can't imagine why I wouldn't have the hum. In any case it's good to know if I do pick up a hum I know what the problem is. Oh, and I will post a couple of new pix if I get a chance tomorrow.

By the way, you had me wondering if I had missed something. I just got back from the garage, listening for hum with both the radio on and off while cycling the module and there is just no hum there. Guess I just got lucky this time. I already have a pretty good stack of parts that didn't work out or I just decided not to use.
