So my '16 had Boom1 in it. Is upgrading to Boom2 worth it ? Does anything need reflashed ?

Yes it would need flashed if you change to Boom II.   Boom II's have external digitally controlled amps for each pair of speakers in your system and Boom I uses the heads internal amp.   

For the record, I have had two bikes with Boom II systems and they have performed flawlessly.    I am an audiophile and I play my music loud all the time.    Boom II offers crisp highs and powerful lows.    I have never blown a speaker (knock on wood!)     I don't know if this has anything to do with the longevity but my bikes are always parked in the garage when I am not riding and I live in Ohio so from Nov to March they see little activity??  I also wipe my bikes down with detailer spray every ride or two so they rarely get water soaked.   
I have seen some "High End" Aftermarket Systems that sound good with Subs and Amps but for most of the AM systems I hear and see, my Boom II's blow them away, especially in the clean bass department.   

Another consideration is the type of riding you do.  If mostly at high speeds and interstates then Bass tends to get washed out and the mids and highs are what really count towards what you hear.  If that's how you ride then maybe AM systems are right for you?     If you tend to ride more at lower speeds then it's nice to have the power and bass of the Boom II for a rich sound.
I personally recommend the Boom II systems if you are considering.    As for the cost,   buy the parts from a discount dealer and do the work yourself and then just have the dealer flash it.

Not entirely true. My SERGU came stock with one amp under the radio and the Boom I speakers. Not considered Boom II until the speakers are upgraded.

If you think Boom 2 is all that, you need to get out more. Harley uses two separate audio files. One for accessory and one for run. That way they can make it sound good in the showroom but turn it down going down the highway in an attempt to save system. J$M suck and they are selling a bunch of them because even they are better than Harley.

Just had the right rear saddelbag speaker replaced for the 2nd time (1st time with the upgraded driver) and my guy also replaced the left one. So both have now been upgraded to the new design or vendor or whatever. I had upgraded everything on my 2011 CVO except the head unit way before warranty expired. I don't mind the sound that I get out of this system, it's not terrible when it's working properly but I will not replace any components with HD stuff when it fails past warranty.

Go to hdforums audio section to get your answers. This is a great site with a lot of good information but not so much when it comes to audio. Everyone here drinks the Soundz cool aid. That's fine if you want a good (not great) system that cost at least double what it's worth.

So out of curiosity Big Chuck what do you suggest as an upgrade for our Boom systems? I see a lot of what not to do from you but on the positive side what should we spend our money on? It sounds like you've done your research so please share your thoughts.

It's kind of choice you have to make based on your likes, type of music and budget.
But to keep it simple

Stinger spx700x4. Amp  $240
Mmats pa601cx.   6.5" speaker $100 each (They also make 6X9's if needed. Will need     adapters.)
BTBOC kit $250 must have to keep 6.5GT

So about $1000 total and it will blow you away.

This is just one simple quality option.

That amp will fit in same tray as Boom amp. Everything plug and play with that kit. No need to run new speaker wires. Better than J$M, Hogtunes, and atleast as good as Soundz (Better imo) for less than half the price. Full disclosure,  I have not heard the newest Soundz system so I can't compare especially when Pete does not publish any specs on his new line.

I agree that the HD audio system on my 15 SG was a disappointment. The sound quality is ok but the issue, as stated before, is that the speakers don’t last.

I upgraded my system with Biketronics. Amp and speakers.

Sounds good and has a lifetime warranty. Been over two years and no problems so far.

They are worth a look.

Bigchuck  I am on my 3rd right rear, second left rear speaker and second Amp on my 15 CVO SG, so learning about drop in rear speakers is something I am very interested in. Thanks for posting the set up yo recommended. I need to do more research on the Harley AMP (Ohms, Bi-wire configure etc).  Would love to find a drop in Speaker that sounds good, LASTs and is a plug an play option that I cold do my self here in Germany.

I used them with great success on my 2011 and will use them again.
