Good point Nige re the side bars - I have narrow insert ready to overcome any problem. I think a well packed T bag would be OK, but hey, wouldn't want to break my 501's ot T-shirts ;-)

Nige,

Thanks!!!  That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  Does it easily detach from the backrest as well?

Doug
Doug, If you don't get your question answered send me a pm as a reminder and I will get you the answer tonight. I bought the referenced luggage rack when I bought my bike but  have not installed it yet. Good luck, jj.

Hi Doug - not too sure if the rack is easily detachable from the sissy upright. You can certainly detach the whole unit easily though.

Maybe another CVO chum can tell us if the rack is quick detach from the sissy bar or not.

Does that smaller rack work with the short sissy bar that comes on the 07 SERK?

Thanks for the input from all.  The docking hardware in place doesn't seem to be to obvious when the luggage rack is removed.  I really like the versatility of the Road King - with windshield or without, with back rests or without, and with luggage rack or without.  You can get several different looks with the same bike.

Part of the joy of riding a softail or a Road King is being able to get to your destination and remove your screen and rack and cruise the boulevard with some street cred. IMHO theres nothing like these bikes in terms of pure retro HD styling.

Bring on the summer.

Doug

There are four allen head screws (two per side) that hold a clamp on to the upright.  Not something I would call quick detack.  By the way, it won't fit with the short backrest that came with the SERK.  I know, I tried.  It's real close, but no go.

I kept the normal height backrest and passenger backrest from my RK Classic.  I can swap either backrest when I need it.  Remember that some T Bags and others have a pocket t hat fits over the backrest pad.

I had bags from SAC that had small backrest pockets for my Deuce.  I thought I would need to replace them, but found out that SAC would reconfigure them for free.  They added a larger pocket for the backrest and free shipping within a week.  That is customer service!

Thanks - that a big help.  I have a RK Classic so maybe I will hang on to the backrest when I sell it.  I also have a SAC bag from my Deuce.  What did you have to do to get them to alter it for you?

I've got the same luggage rack as Twolanerider.  Holds a lot, quick off and off.   :bananarock:  I was going with the tour pak but that deal didn't go very well.

What's the downside of the tour pack?

From www.coolsac.com

Q: What if I change backrests some day? Do I have to buy a whole new SAC?
A: No. As a free service, we will alter your backrest to a new fitment upon request. Here is the procedure for obtaining this service:

1. Take down the following four measurements of your new backrest:
a. The width of your backrest at its widest point.
b. The height of your backrest from top to bottom.
c. The thickness of your backrest, to include the bar and the pad.
d. The distance from your luggage rack to the top of your pad. Or, if you have no luggage rack, the distance from the horizontal plane of the passenger seat to the top of your pad.

2. With these dimensions and your contact information, ship your bag to:

SAC
Attn: Alterations
2180 Elmwood Avenue
Buffalo, NY 14216

We will ship the bags back to you on UPS ground on our dime. If you need faster shipping, we can upgrade your shipping if you agree to pay the difference in the cost. The turn around time for this procedure varies according to the season. Ask before you send if you are planning a trip.

Please note: we can put a new pocket on your bag, but we cannot put on a multi-fit pocket.

Best part is they leave yourt smaller pocket inside so it could still be used, and they replaced the straps on one of my bags with sturdier type for free.

Do you have to take the side cover off to access the SERT and attach the bag?

I'm surprised that I didn't get my chops busted earlier on this one.  I went back and modified to "SERK", but if there is a luggage rack for the SERT, it would give me a place to mount that disk (my tech guy said that I needed to travel with it in case of an out of town problem).

You don't have to travel w/disk or cables dealers will have them. What you do need to bring w/you is the interface (see picture below). This is what mates to your bike (ECM) and your bike only.
