Amplifier Removal
« on: March 21, 2007, 08:51:09 PM »

Hate to start a new thread but when I search, the link will not take me to the old threads.

I want to take the Tourpak off now but I can't afford the Hawg Wired system for a few months.

I'm putting a Bushtec hitch on as well

My question is...will my tunes work without the amp?

What did you do with the Com cable for the passenger?

I know what to do with everything else based on research here.

I answered my own question...the radio does not work with the amp removed.

If it is the same radio as the stock bikes how does the radio work in those without the amp?

If you remove the fairing and unplug the amp from the radio will it revert back to the stock function?

Sixgun...I have not done this, but from my understanding if you remove the amp and wiring harness, the stereo reverts to the same as what would be on a Street Glide...two speakers and internal amp.

Jim (hd-dude) can for sure answer the how-to part of this equation, so you may want to PM him if he doesn't see this thread.

Sixgun;
You can remove the amp and retian all functions of the radio. You will need to disconnect and or remove the overlay harness in its entirity. The harness has plugs all the way through and if you follow it and unplug and reconnect as you go it all works. I'll PM you my number if you'd like I can talk you through this.

Go for it Sixgun. I took mine off, reconnected the factory harness that was in the fairing already and was good to go. No regrets at all. The radio works fantastic without it. Being rid of that eye-sore far outways any audio value it might have provided. Besides, when I ride I want to hear the road and my pipes, not the BeeGee's. I'll save the music for the next watering hole down the road. HD-dude will be a big help if you need it. Be sure and post pictures of your project for all of us to enjoy.

If you want to retain this feature just zip-tie the com connector to the rear fender support. It'll work just fine.

HD-Dude appears to be the resident expert on this.  Sooooooo.....

Since the amp under the tour pack wins - hands down for me - as the most disliked feature on the bike....

Is Hog Wired the best way to go to eliminate the amp?  At some point I will likely go to a detachable tour pack, and the amp appears to be the major issue.  Hog Wired amps are the best option?  Also, there will be a lot of wires left to bundle/hide.

Is this easy enough to do?  I can solder/heat shrink wires and on a good day connect red to red and black to black, etc. Is there a wiring harness conversion to eliminate soldering?

Asking for future reference, since currently not planning to spend big bucks on the bike.

The amp harness can be completely removed from bike start at the back of bike and work your way to the front under faring. There are two male/female connections under faring once you unhook amp harness completely then with the two unplugged connections left over, you just plug them back into each other and you will have sound and using internal amp like street glide. When it comes time for Hawg Wired amp install its plug and play.

When you make detachable tour pack there are several wires left over that just plug right back into original plugs in the tour pack and when I'm not using tour pack I coil them up under seat next to battery ect. I f you decided to keep the amp harness there I'm not sure it would fit under seat coiled up? Is quite long and bulky?

I will post some pics of this sometime this week of the wires left over and how I store them under my solo seat.
