Discontinued Part
« on: March 21, 2007, 10:36:25 PM »

All, I just wanted to let you know that HD has discontinued manufacturing the round air cleaner cover that comes on the '07 SERK, and there are only 5 left to get from dealers who have them in stock.

How do I know this...  read on for the long story, but the sentence above says it all.

A few weeks ago I attempted to remove my air cleaner cover in order to remove the warning sticker from the top.  When I went to remove one of the five screws holding the medallion on, I found where the MoCo cross-threaded one when it was put together.  I then took it to my local dealer for warranty repair, where they determined I needed a new cover, medallion, and hardware.  Well, the medallion and hardware came right in, but the service department soon found out about the cover being discontinued.  Fortunately, they were able to get one of the last six still sitting on a shelf.

Who would have thought the air cleaner cover may become more rare than the bike itself!

My guess is that they will fix the cover and put notches on the inner edge where it would hit the breather mounts.  That way they could eliminate the rubber ring (gasket that serves no purpose) between the cover and the filter.  On the inside of the cover is a round chrome spacer that is actually responsible for keeping the gap which I'm sure will be eliminated.  Thren, the new SERKs won't have the air cleaner cover sticking out that extra 3/8 inckh plus.  I am going to make this fix myself very soon.

I already removed that spacer and the 3/8 makes a big differance.

I'd bought one of these covers to use on a SEEG.  Hadn't even noticed the thick spacer tacked inside until it had been mentioned here.

While it certainly would give the leg a bit more clearance without the spacer is there a concern the thin lid might flex a bit without it.  Hate to start see chrome cracking 10,000 miles down the road because of flex and vibration over the long term.

Did you have an issue with the air cleaner hitting the breather /backplate mounts?
I assume you removed the chrome spacer and the rubber extra gasket?  Did you do anything else?

Now that it is warmer, I was going to look into that same mod.

Thanks
