i'm a fan of the hard bags too. you can order hard bags from harley for the FLHRSE3 but they limit the paint to the black ice base with no graphics..... ....you know they could provide, but.

i'm ending up with hard bags with flame graphics by a local guy. forget about trying to match the other granite or marbling effect.

Hey, DoC, thanks for the post. How are you planning on matching the paint. It's pretty easy on the computer, but without the ability to buy all the different components of the paint job from HD, trying to match it seems near impossible. That's why we were planning a complimentary paint scheme. I'd be very interested in hearing what you have in mind. I'm dropping my bags off any day now. Thanks for you input! Hoist!

I'm going to be taking the bike to a custom painter near me.  He's had a few of his bikes on the covers of magazines.  I'm going to see what he thinks.  I also emailed a custom paint shop in Long Island.  They are forum supposed on HDforums.  He said the only thing he needs is a piece of tin from the bike and they can do it.

I guess if the painters are good they could match up anything or do anything.  It's not like HD uses technology that no one else has.

Also, larger custom paint shops do have means of getting HD paint codes and buying paint that matches.

I'll let you know how my progress goes.

(Have to keep my fingers crossed)


It's too bad HD doesn't offer us an option for hardbags.

Hey guys -I've been wrestling with paint for a pair of hard bags since February. I went to HOG Primary Officer Training in Las Vegas over St. Patrick's Day weekend. While I was there I talked to a guy from the Motor Company who thought we should be able to buy paint to match our bikes. Later I got a call from one of his representatives that said they don't sell paint (other than touch up) to anyone "to protect us the Screamin Eagle owners". I guess they think we all want to build "fake" Screamin Eagle bikes or something... I really appreciate them for looking out for us though... I think! 

In the mean time I did some looking around to see what I could find to match my Razor Red paint. I think the base (color) coat may have to be a custom mix to get it to match. Then I found some tiny flake that looks reasonably close to the sparkly stuff in the stock paint. The stuff I found is made by PPG and (I think) the part number is:

DX42 Gold Flamboyance Pearl

It is also available in silver, but I didn't get that part number. After talking to my local paint representative they said that I would need a base coat of color, then a layer of clear with the sparkles in it, and finally a top coat of clear.

The painter I'm working with thinks he has some Burnt Gold Leaf that will match the stock stuff pretty close. I'll post some pictures when (if?) the bags ever get done. (My painter has a good reputation, but it's taking a loooong time and lots of $$$ for some reason.)

Those hard bags look great!  Good luck.  I on the other hand need a set of the leather bags.  If anyone that is upgrading wants help with funding, I can help by buying the leather bags from you.  Just send me a note and we can work it out.  Thanks!

Looks fantastic.   

Rode with Howie and his lovely bride on Sunday, and when he opened up his bags, we were shocked at how small they really were.  They don't look too small from the outside, but when you look inside, they are ridiculously too small.  They look great, but for travelling, you are going to be so much happier with these hard bags, and looks ............. obviously ...............

The way they should have come right from the factory is right.
