Power commanfer or Race tuner
« on: March 23, 2007, 03:32:34 PM »

Which is better or are they basically the same. I know the PC 3 is more user friendlier than the race tuner. The race tuner has to be tuned via dealer where as the power comander can be adjusted with a laptop. Will the race tuner give me more HP & trq over the power commander.

Welcome aboard!  We are more than happy to help you spend all your money as fast as we spent ours!  :bananarock:

In answer to your question:

None of the above -- Zippers with autotune.  (and I've bought them all).

Cheers,

Mark

SERT

The Screaming Eagle Race Tuner allows direct access to the ECU programs and their modification. We are, in affect, creating custom calibrations for specific combinations (just like H-D re flash cartridges). The Race Tuner does, however include many SE calibrations in the map files to select from. These can then be modified or a completely new file created if the combination does not match the calibrations part description.

Race Tuner provides a much higher level of tuning than any other device without replacing the ECU itself. Each cylinders fuel and ignition mapping is independently tuned, using three dimensions, resulting in a custom map that eliminates the possibility of one cylinder fighting or holding back the other.

This equals more horsepower with smooth linear drivability. In addition, warm up enrichment, idle speeds, IAC steps, rev limits, AFR offsets, injector sizing can be changed. To help in tuning or diagnostics, Race Tuner also features a data mode to collect and review sensor inputs or other data. Both of these can only be tuned accurately by using a Computer controlled load cell dyno with real time AFR monitoring.

PCIII

The Power Commander® modifies injector pulse width, ignition timing, front/rear cylinder fuel percent offset, acceleration fuel enrichment (new features being added to USB versions on-line) as a “piggy-backed” device that plugs into the factory ECU harness. No splicing is required, it does not make permanent changes to the ECU and removal returns the bike to its previous configuration.

I would say outta the two on all the info I've read on the site and info from manufacturers sites I would say PCIII. Looks alot easier install and adding of maps. Install is about 2.5 hours or so for the SERT and 1.5 for the PCIII as I have read.

Cheers!

Actually,  you purchase SERT kit, modify the stock ECM and comes with base maps, dongle, and pc program.  If you have a configuration that matches one of the maps (or comes very close) you can use one of Harley's.  (I first did this when I updated my bikes exhaust and air cleaner -- and I used map 84).  You only need to take it to a stealer or tuner when you don't have a match or you want your map to be optimized for the way you ride it.  Be aware, you must always carry the dongle with you as the dealer will not be able to modify your ECM after that.

For PC3, you add a module inline after the ecm.  You get mapping program and base maps from powercommander and if you got a close match your good to go.  If not it is off to the tuner.....

For Zippers with autotune,  you replace your stock Harley ecm and o2 sensors with the Zippers module and o2 wide band system. Zippers will preload a map that matches or is close to your config.   The autotune will provide make adjustments in AFR the more you ride it to optimize your config vs. the map.  The benefit of this is that any time you make a change to your bike (like cams, different exhaust, etc) the autotune will take care of it.   I myself will be looking forward this summer when I go from Houston (sea level) to Nelson, BC and see how the unit optimizes the scoot at altitude.  (A couple of years ago I rode a Houston "optimized" bike through the Rockies and it really acted "winded" in the mountains.)

It may be my experience only, but I have had  very disappointing experiences with the different dealers I've had dyno work done in the past so I place a high $$ value on not having to utilize them any more ($350-$450 a shot).  The savings alone more that offsets the higher cost of the zippers unit.

Hope this is helpful,

Mark

I started with the PCIII and then
I went with the Zippers as well once they had the ECR squared away.
But If you are stuck on a PCIII, I have one that I used on my bike that I
would sell to you.  Only used it on my bike for 500 miles,
it is in mint condition!

Welcome to the Site!.

Get ready for some reading....Here is a thread that has pages and pages of discussion on this topic:

Bottom line is in the hands of a good tuner that is familiar with one or the other similiar results can be obtained. Right now as other stated the Zippers ECM w/autotune is probably the best thing going as it self tunes to the bike.
