Day Twelve | Page, AZ – Cortez, CO | 250 miles

So for years I have been attempting to get into this area and take a tour of Antelope Canyon.  There was always something that prevented it.  Covid, cancelled trips, trip issues but this time I made it work.

The Antelope Canyon is protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation and only authorized tour companies can take visitors to the canyon. Safety and preventing vandalism are the main reasons why everyone needs a guided tour; the canyon became unavailable to the public in 1997.

In the past, one of the tour companies offered a photographer’s tour but this is no longer available.  In addition, you are limited on the equipment you can take since Covid.  Everyone took photographs but the best ones I am using were mostly from iPhones, which I do not have but my krewe did.

Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding and other sub-aerial processes.

Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways.

Over time the passageways eroded away, deepening the corridors and smoothing hard edges to form characteristic "flowing" shapes.

On August 12, 1997, eleven tourists, including seven from France, one from the United Kingdom, one from Sweden and two from the United States, were killed in Lower Antelope Canyon by a flash flood.

Very little rain fell at the site that day, but an earlier thunderstorm dumped a large amount of water into the canyon basin 7 miles.

The lone survivor was tour guide Francisco "Pancho" Quintana, who had prior swift-water training.
