Bike dies while riding
« on: June 16, 2024, 09:33:53 PM »

2018 CVO Road Glide....went out for a ride yesterday and every once in a while the radio would cut out--complete loss of power and come right back on. Figured something was going on with the radio, but then 20 minutes later the bike started cutting out while riding.....if I was at speed, in gear it would restart on it's own, but if it was at idle not moving I would have to push the start button to get going again. When this happens all the gauges go dead as well.....and right before it happens I see the voltmeter going from it's normal spot at 14 all the way to above 16, then the bike dies.

Besides battery connections what else could cause this??? I'm thinking maybe a ground, but where are they all??? Or am I thinking in the wrong direction??

I think You're going in the right direction with a bad connection somewhere. Just follow the wires and see where they go.

How old is the battery?

3 months....changed it at the beginning of this season since it was coming up on 6 years and started to crank weak.

One more thing to check…

My 2019 cvo did the same thing with my passenger on board.
We coasted to the side of the road and I started checking things.
I had it in to the dealership about a week prior for some warranty work (transmission).

Traced it down to a main 50a fuse that was barely seated in the socket. Dealership probably pulled it while in for service and never plugged it in completely.

Not saying your issue is the same, but your symptoms are the same as mine were. Poor connection somewhere in the electrical. Battery cables are also suspect.

Good luck 👍

Didn't check for codes since there was no Ck Eng Light while it was running.....I guess it wouldn't hurt to be sure though

Checked the 50AMp fuse---it felt like it pushed in maybe a hair (and I mean the slightest bit possible) when I checked it, but it didn't feel like it was loose enough to cause this. I will try to wiggle the fuse and wiring behind it later to see if I can re-produce the problem.

someone else suggested a bad voltage regulator?? The voltmeter was going to 16 right before the bike dies----it was suggested that was some kind of protection???  I checked and it's charging right now to 14.3 at the battery......

****UPDATE Found a DTC B2272---- BCM voltage high so I am ordering a voltage regulator. Odds are (hopefully) that should fix it. There seems to be an over voltage protection built into the system that shuts down when the voltage is well over normal....maybe that is what is happening (another I hope)

While there I checked all the grounds, but they all were good and tight with no corrosion.

I still want to know why it throws a code without showing a check eng light....but that's another story.

I will post when it is installed and tested......

Thanks for all the suggestions and big Thanks to Don (Twolanerider) for the troubleshooting phone call!!

If you haven’t installed the regulator, open the derby cover and take a sniff - ensure you haven’t burnt part / or a phase of the stator

Hopefully that is not the case....the regulator is in and the bike is charging when I checked in the garage. Test ride tonight after work......fingers crossed.

***UPDATE****

48 mile test ride tonight and all is normal...radio stayed on and the voltmeter was right where it needed to be and stayed there.

And just to add...what a PIA the regulator was to replace....HD puts locktite on all 4 bolts and I had to remove the bracket to drill out 2 of them since the T27 heads suck!! Of course, the oil cooler line is part of the bracket  :bigcry:

Thanks for all the suggestions.....
