Electricity goes out while riding the bike
« on: September 22, 2024, 08:41:45 AM »

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and I have 2011 Softail Convertible with only 8K miles. I have electrical issues with the bike and i will list them below:
- When i used to wash it like any bike it does not start i mean the switch is on but nothing happens and does not ask for pin code. After it dries for couple of days it starts fine
_ I wash it carefully now but when i ride it for 45 minutes the check engine and ABS lights on and then the tachometer dies as if the bike is switched off   then it comes alive again.

I need to know how to diagnose it cuz the dealer says everything looks fine.
It has Rinehart exhaust from new and K&N Filter.

Regards,

Welcome from Spokane.
Get electrical contact cleaner ans dielectric grease.
Power bike on and remover main power fuse, power off and disconnect the battery.
Pull each fuse 1 at a time while feeling or a loose connection or the blade of the fuse into the box and look for any corrosion also.
Next start with harness connectors  again look for corrosion and confirm the wires are pushed all into the connector add the dielectric grease and reconnect ensuring the locks seat. Do the same with connectors to switches and ECM,  clean the battery cables to the battery and ground wires to frame.
Hook up the battery power the bike up and reinstall main power fuse, shut down power than start the bike see if anything helped, still may need a new on / off switch.
Good luck,

Very good advice from Joel, above. Definitely disassemble the starter switch and right hand switch gear, clean and apply dielectric grease. Next time you wash the bike, consider drawing with your leaf blower or other air propulsion mechanism to make sure everything gets dried out. That will also keep things from corroding. And good luck!

Thank you for you advice, and i think i should check the on off switch. The problem is that it shuts off while im riding the bike the gauge goes off and then starts back up. Other than that the bike rides fine. The signal indicator cluster is not working ( N , oil lamp, and high beam ) are not working anymore. I was going to order the part but suddenly they worked and now broken again. I think i have to check the fuse box for all electricity there is something lose somewhere due to vibrations. I was about to sell it and buy a new one but i love old school bikes even though this one has new features which i dont really care for.

Thanl you again for your reply man I appreciate it.

Hi,

Have you tried replacing the ignition (key) switch?
