2025 RG vs RG-ST with 135 kit
« on: December 16, 2024, 10:27:05 PM »

so assuming HD makes the CVO RG and RG-ST in 25 and if you were going to upgrade to the 135 motor kit, which would you pick? I get you would have to add the rear speakers and heated grips on the ST but any other difference? Can you do the 135 kit with the VVT motor and if you do is there a difference?

Go with the ST. It's already got an upgraded suspension with the inverted forks and remote reservoir shocks. I don't recall you talking about taking a passenger with you so the solo seat is a none issue. Just go with a good amp and killer front speakers. You can't hear the rears anyway once you're over 30 mph which I suspect only happens to you when leaving your garage. lol

There are pros and cons to both so it depends on your intended usage of the  bike.

The CVO Road Glide is better suited for touring.  Riding position is a little more relaxed.  It has heated grips.  With the rear seat and add a passenger back rest you can carry luggage on the back seat.  You can add an aftermarket back rest from Bad Boyz Cyclez.  You have a place to put hwy pegs.

The CVO Road Glide ST is set up as a performance bagger.  The rear shocks have remote mount reservoirs.  The riding position is a little more aggressive. It offers two ride modes the other one doesn't, track and track plus.  It is also 25 pounds lighter then the CVO RG. It would take more effort to turn it in to a touring machine.  Not sure you can add a rider back rest due to the piece that takes the place of the passenger seat. It offers two ride modes the other one doesn't, track and track plus. It doesn't really have a place to add hwy peggs.

I know your plan is to go with the 135 either way.  If you were stay with stock motor the VVT 121 is set up much better for touring.  Cruising at 80 mph is roughly 3000 rpm.  Torque curve is traditional harley touring bike except starts earlier and caries longer, its pretty flat.  The High Output 121 in the  ST the power comes on later, it likes to be ridden at a higher RPM.  In my opinion steady 80 mph your on the bottom side of the power curve.  When I rode it it felt best 3500 rpm and up.

From what I understand when you go 135 on either bike they get the same  tune.

My riding buddy looked into the 135 kit on his new ST. To keep the warranty it has to be dealership installed.
Cost is way out there!
He’s been riding it a little harder after the break in miles : about 1500 so far. You might be surprised how nice it runs stock, he keeps up with me pretty good on passing power.
Looking at the dyno charts on the 135 kit it puts the ST around the same as my 124. I believe in a drag race I can take the 135 as my TQ curve comes on earlier compared to the 135. Only thing I noticed is riding his bike vs mine is the power comes on later in the revs, but seems to pull very nice, no big hits through the rpm range.

IMHO I would ride the 121 ST as is, add the heated grips, luggage rack, good headset speakers, forget the bag speakers.
Suspension is nicer on the ST than the RG CVO. Stock ST seat is not that great. Handlebars are too far forward for me.
Some easy fixes if I were to buy one.

Just some thoughts comparing my CVO Limited vs the new ST. We’re going riding again this week and will switch bikes again for some more comparison details.  :2vrolijk_21:

Dave, you beat me to the punch! LOL
The 135 kit loses the VVT on either bike, not a big deal IMO
The ST gearing is a little different than the RG 121. Yes, likes to rev.

I own a 2024 CVO Rd. glide. I really liked the ST but there was too many things. I would have to change to make it fit me and my riding style.

The standard CVO comes with

Passenger pegs
Heated grips
Rear speakers with amp
Garage door opener
Easier to install highway pegs
Rear seat.
Heel shifter
More comfortable handlebars IMHO
I like the floorboards on the standard CVO better
Nicer mirrors on the standard CVO

I think the wheels on the ST look way better than the wheels on the standard CVO
The ST comes with a composite oil pan. I can see this being problematic for a couple reasons.
The front suspension on the ST is adjustable and there are a few parts that are different than the standard CVO.
I like the black and white colors on the CVO ST, I think the copperhead and legendary orange colors are also incredible colors.

In the end, I think it really boils down to personal preference and how many parts you’re willing to change.

Thanks guys! Currently have a 12 CVO RG with a S&S 124 (crate) and a 19 CVO RG with a 131 kit but Fullsac header, TAB Zombies and great TTS tune. Ohlins front and rear on both. I ride a bunch so have 90K on the 12 and 60K on the 19 (plus a 23 BMW Bagger that has about 30K on it) so time for a new bike and of course keep the others but spread miles. Riding style definitely up in the revs and intend to change bars to Tbars either bike I get (could do heated grips on ST then if that's the bike) as well as seat as my butt can't take any stock seat.
Why would composite oil pan be an issue and sorry if stupid question?
Sorry to show my "chick side" but looks of the 25 will be a big factor after reading these responses on which I go with.
I am 65 now and this may be the last bike I get so will make this a project bike and may end up with the best of both whichever I choose.
Only ride solo, been married for 35 years and she yells at me when we drive in a car together..

I think you would like the power curve on the ST more than the CVO RG (with the vvt).
The ST has the upper end pull that you could compare with the other bikes you have now. Going to the 135 would increase the “fun factor “ I’ll bet!

I just turned 78 this month and my 2019 124 is the last project bike I’ll do ( unless it blows up) LOL
I’ve got the power and gearing where I like it, and it’s my “go to “ bike for touring. It has about 97K miles now and I usually just use it on the long rides. My 113 evo S&S is more of my city bike: solo seat and power curve on the upper revs. My 2000 95” softail is my fun bike when I ride with the club. Last bike I got rid of was my 2003 anniversary heritage, finally down to just a few (4) 2 wheelers to take care of! LOL

The composite oil pan on the ST will probably be on all models soon, it has a twist drain plug that Pete says a copy of the VW pan. They been using them on cars for years, like the plastic manifolds, etc.
expect to see more of that in the future.

Don’t expect much of a change in the 25MY, probably just some colors and accessories.
Any leftover 24 models will be discounted! Food for thought!
