Stage 3 110 to 117
« on: June 22, 2025, 07:21:57 PM »

2016 FLHTKSE, 32,500 miles. I had HD do the Stage 3 upgrade. I did the first 5O0 breakin miles and returned to HD for the final Dyno tune. I picked up the bike and the next day I took it out for a ride, during the ride I noticed some oil on my right floorboard I thought it was water from some puddle I ran through. I got home and found more than that, there was a small puddle of oil on the crankcase behind the front jug and there was oil spray all over the right side of the bike. I thought the upgrade had sprung a leak. I took the bike back to HD and they said it was just the vapor return to the air intake. They said do another 500 miles with the new tune and call me in the morning. I did another 500 and the oil spray is just as bad as it was. Now HD is saying its a known issue in maybe 1% of the upgrades and I'm just out of luck. They recommend some sort of split oil stick, I looked it up $245 buck plus labor. I'm researching external breahter filters now but I'm not convinced that this oil issue is something more than just the vapor return isn't working correctly saying that it engine can't create enough vaccume to pull the vapor back into the intake. Long story short I'll be taking the bike back to HD to have everything checked out to ensure that it wasn't just a torque issue. The 110 never had this vapor return issue, I had the 103 it did seep into the air filter but not like this. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

FOLLOWUP:
I did the 500 as they requested and the problem did not resolve itself, as I suspected. I took it back and we had a long discussion about my expectations and went over where I thought the oil was coming from, and it wasn't the vapor returns. The Service Coordinator came out went over the bike and agreed with my assessment, she told me that she would take care of it and not to worry. 3 days later I got the call to pick up the bike. When I arrived she was very apologetic about what happened and assured me that the issue was fixed, it was the rocker box gasket that failed. She said they took the bike out and put 120 miles on it with no issues. I'm going to take it out this weekend and give it a couple of hundred miles just to make sure there are no lingering issues. Thanks for the input.

Sounds like a dealer problem. If they won’t take care of their work I’d suggest you go elsewhere.

Most dealers will back up whatever work they do on your bike.
If the bike didn’t leak before, it shouldn’t leak now!
