Compensator?
« on: March 26, 2026, 10:36:48 AM »

Buddy has a 2015 Ultra Classic with a103 twin cam.  Starting to hear some Ticking/rattling noise that seems to be coming from the left side of the motor.  Checking here to see if there are any known issues with the compensator and or lifters for this particular model and year.  Bike has 62K and has had regular service.  Still in the diagnostic phase so checking to see if there are any known issues so we have a starting point.

Thanks.

The search function is your friend. Try going to the "Drive Train" board and enter "compensator" in the search bar.

Search function wasn't much help as nothing found for the 2015 (non-CVO) model year.  Putting this back out to see if anyone has any specific info about compensator and/or lifter issues for a 2015 103" Ultra Classic.

I gad a 2015 CVO Streetglide and went through 4 Harley compensators then installed a Baker. Yes it was a 110. So don't know if that helps or not.

So, had a chance to look/listen to the bike today.  No "kluncking" on start or stop but definitely an intermittent knocking noise at idle from the lower left side of the bike.  My buddy says it gets worse the longer he rides.  Leaning towards the compensator but going to drain and check the fluid and if necessary pull the primary cover to check it.

If we need to replace the compensator, what is the recommended replacement?  Per the HD parts manual the P/N is 36500034A with a spring pack of 83936-09A.  This is the same compensator that is in the 2015 CVO bikes.  He is leaning towards the HD part so we would need the latest HD part and if anyone has an aftermarket suggestion that may be a consideration.

I have R and R compensators on my '05 SEEG and my '03 RK and I am familiar with the procedure.  The newer Twin Cams appear to have a different style compensator with a different bolt set up.  What is the proper procedure for replacing the compensator on a 2015 Twin Cam - specifically the installation procedure?

Thanks
