Main shaft seal and bearing race
« on: May 26, 2026, 11:27:57 AM »

Has anyone encountered a main shaft bearing race that was pushed all the way to the seal?
Also, are you using the specific tools to remove and replace seal and bearing race or what?
Looking at mine, it looks like I may have to either
A( find a collar that will clamp on the outside of the race or
B( weld a nut on either side of the race to pull it
Any suggestions appreciated

It happens. The race will walk.  I've taken an angle grinder and carefully created a notch to get the puller on or (my preferred option) taken an angle grinder and put a notch in line with the shaft (rather than across it for the puller) to make it really thin.  Then split it with a chisel.  Then it just pulls off with your hand.  I was never precious enough with a torch to get just the race hot enough to expand and slide off.

Oh yeah, there are kits (Baker and others) that replace that bearing and race combination with a larger ID bearing; so no more race.  Doing that takes a different seal though.  Be sure you don't use the new bearing and old seal.

The seal is my actual problem. I’m pretty sure that the race walked over into it and started chewing up the seal.
I could probably live with a little bit of oil but it’s leaking but my bike has never leaked oil before and I’m about to go on a 10,000 mile trip.
How about putting the seal and the race back on? Do you have or use the specialty tools or just make do?

Did the race walk "in" toward the transmission and that seal is damaged?  From your description that is the assumption.  If so the race has to come off to to change the seal and, yes, there are tools to both remove and install the race.  You'll (hopefully) only be doing it once so don't be stupidly expensive tools.  Link at the bottom is an example from Amazon that is both puller and installer.

You will still have to get that "horseshoe" part of the tool on the outside of the race for the puller to work though.  That is where either you have carefully grind an edge down enough that you can get the puller behind it or, alternatively, just split it.  When reinstalling hopefully the install tool has a dead stop so that the race cannot be installed too deep.  Be careful as you do the install though.  Use that horseshoe part of the installer as a guide.  The race needs to stop while there would still be room to get the removal tool behind it.

You're going to have to remove the race to replace the seal.  That reason alone has always been enough to make me go the other way and use the aftermarket bearing that no longer requires the race.  Because seals do eventually leak.  It's just far less hassle not to have to deal with that pressed on bearing race.  If you go that way look for Baker's "High Torque" bearing kit (link further at the end).  It probably doesn't cost anymore than Harley will charge you for the OE race and seal (just a guess - didn't look).

Got the main dive pulley, race (his to split it) and seal, the seal was a pain in the ass.
Now I’m waiting for parts.
Had to make a tool to remove and install the drive pulley but that wasn’t hard.
I’m going back with oem bearing and race, I don’t mind having to do it if it lasts another 22 years.
I appreciate the wisdom.

I thought about your suggestion to use the sealed bearing upgrade, and decided to order a Jim’s bearing kit I ordered the sprocket spacer also because there’s an obvious groove around the OD of it where the seal has ridden.
You wouldn’t happen to know the part number of the quad seal behind the spacer would you?
I had already ordered the Jim’s race tool but I’m going to return it ,that’s hard because I like cool tools even if I don’t use them.
