JC

I'm with you.
When I'm older than death I see a trike for me.
But only if it leans.
Besides,  by then the motor will make so much horsepower that it will take two wheels to handle it.

 :2vrolijk_21:

Or maybe one of those Can Am Bombadiers trikes with two wheels upfront. :nixweiss:

Never having ridden or even paid close attention to a trike before that's something I'd not thought of Chip.  There'd be no lean to a solid axle rear end.  Would need at least independent trailing arms.  Gawd I hope I never need one....

I'm not sure you could lean a independent suspension either, if you were sitting still and leaned on the trike you might get it to move a little, but at speed in a turn the centrifugal force is going to pull you to the outside of the turn, the sway bar will help keep more towards center. There are some experimental trikes with suspension that leans into the turn, saw a video, looks like it works pretty well. I haven't seen anyone selling them in large quantities yet.

Spiderman,

We manufcture the kit and sell to our dealers who do the conversion on your bike. They might do trade.

In northern IL we do the conversion, we do not take trade in bikes

The only bike we sell outright are our demo bikes when they are two years old, or if some one has to have one now we will sell it if we have time to build one befour the next bike event we need to be at.

Twolanerider and Talon:

The "Leaning bike"....
The web site the talon found is the only "bike" that works as a leaning bike. The cost is high for this model but it works. Read the web site to see what they did to get it to work. One needs to know what you want in a bike. And as I said look into the cost of it.

Dean, they are also not conversions, they are purpose built. Being new technology I assume they are very expensive, but if you see the video in the one like they turn on a dime! I wouldn't want a body either, want a bike! Just thought I'd throw it out so people could see what might be for trikes in the future, like when I need one.

Talon,

You are correct.

The trike market is getting larger each year. The conversion kits started about 25 years ago and has picked up each and every year.

On that subject

Anyone remember a wrestler named Magnum TA?
He was a star wrestler in the southeast that was up and coming in his career.
Unfortunately he had a car accident and became paralyzed.
I now see him around Charlotte riding a trike.
He has those monster Mickey Thompson tires on it. (must be 24" wide each)
A very cool looking trike!
Last time I spoke with him he was going to do a conversion so the bike would lean.
I believe he had a 131 TP motor and was looking at going around the curves faster.

So Neil, YES! twin 300's would be awesome!

Hey, just saw your above post!
That's exactly how his bike looked!

Thanks Talon......I stand to be corrected.

I met Dean at Sturgis last year and was able to view up close a number of DFT Trikes and was impressed.  That's not saying a whole lot since my knowledge is very limited and I do thank Dean for enlightening me.  They had some very, very nice looking trikes.

I know that when I left there I was thinking "if I ever have to get a trike, it'll be one with independant suspension".  And there was a time a couple of years ago (after my accident where I shattered the whole left side of my body) when I thought I may have to ride a trike if I were going to ride again.

I also saw several trikes in Milwaukee in 2003 that I would have jumped on and taken a ride in a heartbeat, had the opportunity presented itself.  They're coming out with some trick stuff now days, in the three wheeled arena.  I think that as far as production three wheels go, DFT is on the front edge.

Yea, the IRS with a good sway bar would be the way to go. If someone would figure out an air bag system coupled with shocks that had a speed sensor and would lean the bike a little at higher speeds, with the turning of the handle bars that would be cool!!

My wife had a 1200 XLCH with a Lehamn trike conversion. The kit is well made and it rode very well for two years with no problems. There is a Lehman dealer in Greer, SC check their link at  http://www.cherokeetrikes.com/ . They are the largest Lehman dealer in the country.  Lehman is the oldest trike maker and have a very good reputation.
