Navigation System CDs
« on: April 18, 2007, 12:01:36 PM »

I thought it would be a good idea to make copies of the navigation system CDs (we have 4 CDs in the European set) as they are bound to get damaged in normal use.  So, I copied them - no problem doing it. The copies appear to have identical content to the originals, and they have the same CD title. BUT..... they don't work! :o :( >:(  I've done it again, different drive, different software, slow speed write, very careful. AND..... they STILL don't work!

Anybody else had difficulty with this?

No sign of them being copy protected, and they are CDs for sure!  :nixweiss:

We work with Navteq discs in most of our cars and they seem to have a system to block copy/reading copy.  I guess that's why they can charge so much for the replacements.

I suspected as much, RJ; some research is required, I feel!

Hey Jim,

How do you test the copy ?
What's the problem ?

I've made a copy of the CD N° 3 and insert in the GPS.
No problem, the navigation software starts normally.
I've not tested for a ride.

The bike just doesn't recognise the CD, Jaques.  When it says "insert CD no. 1" I insert it, and nothing happens......  What software did you use to copy yours?

Here is what I noticed. I can copy the CD's, no problem. If the navigation is activated in the HK unit, the copies will work fine. If the HK loses power, the nevigation is no longer activated. Now if I insert the copies, it won't work. So I have to insert the orginal (once) so the nav is activated. Then I can go back to using my copies. There is something on the originals it looks for to activate but not after that. HTH

I agree with you coyotedata,

but I've not tested with the HK without power and download the copy for a new init.

My navigation is activated in the HK unit, my copy will work fine.

I've made the copy with the software "NERO" and the choice "Copy entire disk".
At the end of the copy, I asked a control of the copy/original and it was full of errors but it works.

Not quite sure I'm following that, CData.  Do you mean that if it asks for disk 1, I have to stick the original one, but if I later - without turning the bike off - need to plan another route, it will accept the copy?  If so, that's kind of self defeating, as you still need to have the original in use every time you turn the ignition off....

Hmm.... I tried a copy with Roxio, with Sonic, and with Windows Vista - maybe I'll try Nero.

I understand if you disconnect the battery, you lose the initial navigation datas and you need to set again with the original CD. It's the SETUP of the navigation.

In a second time, you need to download a coverage area.
In this case, the copy works.

Just now, I've  tested again because I was not sure if it was the downloaded datas or if it need to read my CD.
I confirm, it reads the CD.

OK, I best try Nero, I think.  Thanks for confirming that Jacques!   :drink:  :2vrolijk_21:

My NAV system says "cd error replace cd" - my disc 1 is apparently bad.  Is there something I can do to save me the $180 HD wants for the cd set?  Thanks, PJ
