Pick up my 07' SERK saturday...need help with mods
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:03:25 PM »

Newbie here!  My first HD and am in need of some help from those of you with experience.  I have done some minor research as to what mods are good to do right off the bat.  And, my goal is to get my 07' SERK as perfectly running/performing as possible...or within reason.  So, before I pick it up on Saturday, what mods should I go ahead and have the dealer do (eventhough its brand new)??  Rhinehart exhaust, better tips, SERT, SE A/C, etc...??? Please forgive my ignorance for the lack of knowledge and understanding of the HD performance terminology.  I am slowly learning and have read also about some minor problems and how some of these mods can help with cooling, more efficient, etc....thanks everyone for your help. :2vrolijk_21:

Paul,

Best of luck with the SERK, and yes do the mods before you leave the dealer, trust me I had planned on waiting until break-in was over and ended up with a new engine before the break-in period because of heat issues.

Don't feel the urge to do anything immediately.  I've owned many H-D's.  I ride high performance sport bikes and dirt bikes.  H-D nailed this bike out of the box.  Have no problem with heat, no problem with arm ripping performance, no problem with the ergos, enjoying the delightful stock exhaust note, etc. and etc.  The needs of others, perceived or real, will not necessarily be yours.  Why not give the bike a chance stock, then make an appointment for some mods at 500 miles or 1000 miles, doing some research and seeing what you really want/need versus rush it.

We need some pics when you pick it up.  :2vrolijk_21:

My wife who was dead set against me getting any additional mods ordered me to get the exhaust changed the first time she heard it.  I added V&H slip-ons, SERT, K&N filter and I'm happy with the dyno results and sound.  The word on the street is that Reinharts are louder.  I believe it I just haven't heard a 110 with each set up to compare.  But Reinharts are louder than slip-ons on other set ups.

I'm happy with the stock seat, but added matching passenger floor boards for the wife and adjustable mounting bracket for when the kids ride.

The windshield is ok for interstate riding, but I'd like to get a bigger one for the chance rain shower on long trips.  I also got a luggage rack.  Much better than the touring pak IMHO.

But my favorite mod by far has nothing to do with the CVO line-up.  It's my high/low beam activated garage door opener.   :bananarock: :bananarock:

Paul,

My first advice to you is change the windshield.  Unless all you plan on doing is riding around town you will not like this windshield.   :2vrolijk_21:

After that, its up to you man.  This is your first Harley so you shouldn't have any preconceptions of how you think the bike should sound or preform.  Pick the thing up tomorrow and go ride it.  Have fun with it.  And once you've come up with a list of all the things you want the bike to do that its not doing, then come back here and ask these Gurus for their suggestions.

My final piece of advice, unless you decide to go with a closed loop system like the TMAX, do all of your performance mods at one time.  You find it much easier on your wallet, and you will have more time with your bike, if your not having to have the thing dyno'd everytime you add something to it.

Let us know how things go tomorrow and your first impressions of the bike.

Later,
Ghost

if you want it to be fast,,,,,, get the RED one.   OOOOPS  too late. ;D

if your asking so you can include the parts in the loan,, then get slip on mufflers(any HP brand) and a sert, or PC111

thats all I've done to mine, and it runs great.  of course it's RED so its faster. :apple:

I must admit....the red does look really good.  And, after seeing them both in person, it was a hard choice.  Honestly, I would be happy with either color and only went with the black because the HD dealer in Pikeville, KY gave me a better deal and customer service than the HD Dealer in Huntington, WV (who had the red one).  The dealer in WV was alot closer to me, but I was very dissapointed in how they dealed and treated me as a customer.  So, black it is and I wont look back.  But, your red is beautiful.......I just hope the red can keep up with me because we all know the black is faster :P

Oh, slip ons and a sert/pc111 is probably all I will do initially.  I think I will take everyones advice and just ride it and enjoy it for the first 500 miles and then see what I want to do.  Thanks for all the advice and keep the wind in your face :bananarock:
