After flipping through 36 pages here, and reading the Zumo owners manual, I still can't make heads or tails whether these things will capture a driven route that you can download and share?
Yes. The Zumo will save tracks of where you have been (rode) and you can download the tracks by using the "Receive from device" feature. Once there you can name them, save them and share them. Have you checked out this manual - Mapsource Tutorial? It's a great teaching tool for Mapsource.

The new HD zumo looks to be a 550 in Harley clothing. Anyone know of any differences?http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772554&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302491575&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302491575&bmUID=1217092770956&bmLocale=en_US

All HD dealer Locator software and extra $200 makes it a Harley Item- Regular Zumo - better way to go you can save the extra $$ for T-shirts.

I've seen some of the installs in this post, and have noticed that in some the fuel gauge is obstructed by the unit.

On a closeup of Gary's I see that there is a fuel reading on the Zumo display.... how the @#$% does the GPS know how much fuel you have/used?

Is the reading accurate?

You tell it how many miles you get to a tank, and reset it to full when you fill up.  It's as accurate as the figure you tell it you get from a tankful!  ;)

There are several available at www.garmin.com in downloads depending on which model GPS you have.
I'm looking for the "nagging wife" download and can't seem to find it.  :o  I figured I'd feel right at home then....

So has anyone used the HD ride planner and synched it to the zumo?  Just wondering if there were any downfalls or issues?

I have used the ride planner on several occasions and it works great. However it is easier to use mapsource overall. Mapsource is a little harder to master but once you master it you will find it just as easy. Harleys ride planner is based on Goggle Maps and it does work. Try the same route on both programs and you should be able to make a decision thats fits what you want to do.

Yup. VERY disappointing results!  :(  It's fine on the HD planner site, but when you load it on to your Zumo, it's pretty well useless; instead of following the roads, it has straight lines between points, so doesn't tell you turns. Back to the drawing board...

One thing I discovered on my recent long trip round Europe is that the 550 announcing street names is useless (except in the US I suspect.) I turned it off, as it's so confusing.  First problem - in Europe, often there are no obvious street name signs; second problem - in a country where the language is not English, the TTS attempt at pronunciation of the street name is nothing like reality, and confuses you further.  In the US of course, both of these are probably not problems at all.  I found it easy to make major mistakes at complex junctions in a city, for example - you could not make out what the voice was saying, and you couldn't see a sign in any case.  Better if it told you to turn "in the direction of" as you'd often see a signpost at a junction indicating where the road went, but no street name; as you are in unfamiliar territory, you have no idea if the direction sign is where your route will take you, among small towns and villages, so if the Garmin told you to "turn left towards nextown" instead of "turn left onto somesuchstrasse" it would be a million times better.

Jim,

Probably better street name pronunciations in English, but they still leave a lot to be desired. Not close enough to make any sense quite a bit depending on the name it is mangling.  Wife & I laugh about it & usually can figure out what it means, but not always.

Like the idea of telling which town to head towards - many roads here are just numbers (Zumo gives the street name usually) but many turns do have the next town on the road  sign.  I have ound several dirt road/no road "turns" also.  It will recalculate the route but sometimes wants to take the "no road" road anyway.

Hi Mike. Yes, the wife and I laughed at lot at the French ones especially!  Trouble is you don't have time to try to figure out exactly what the street is (even if there IS a sign with the street name).   Sounds like the street name is also a problem for you too.

Dirt roads? Hmmmmm.......... touchy subject!  So, I'm in deepest rural France.  FULLY loaded, wife on the back, nice and <top> heavy. Riding with a big group, heading for a city. However, we have a friend who lives not too far off the route, so we tell the group leader that when we get to the back of the group (we are using the 2nd man drop off system) - I'll tell the Zumo to take me to my friend's place, and we'll catch them up in the evening at the hotel.  All goes according to plan, we are at the back, Zumo says take next road on the left. I wave goodbye and take it.  It's a very narrow road, about 10' or 12' wide. First corner is 50 yards after the junction, a hairpin left. Then 100 yards downhill to a 90 degree right. Another 50 yards, and the tar disappears - it's now a dirt road, but not TOO bad. Zumo says it's just a mile long so I figure I can manage a mile. Uphill another ¼ mile, and a hairpin left over a crest, now going downhill. Surface is getting seriously bad, but Zumo is still telling me this is the correct route.  Car/truck tracks are deep, rocky ruts, center is a grass covered hump, verges are rough vegetation. Steep downhill towards a right hand hairpin, and despite Zumo's assurance, the rapidly worsening surface tells me "no way, dude!" - so I need to turn. But I'm on a steep dirt road, 10' wide with huge ruts and no verges to speak of.  Ahead looms another right hand downhil hairpin..... I stop, the mrs gets off, and at the hairpin I take about 30 cuts to turn round, with the air temp around 100 degrees.  My legs are burning, the 110 is doing what 110s do when they reach 1000F, the wife is in tears, but I get round.  I point the bike back up the tank-testing track, and decide I HAVE to stop, or the flesh on my thighs will start to go crispy and black.  So I'm at the side of the track, and put my (short, stumpy - I'm a little over 5'5") legs down. Except the left one is smack in the middle of the left hand rut. About 3" or 4" lower than the other side.  You can guess what's coming - yup, down goes the bike, completely on its side, onto the rocks, not just the usual 30 degree angle, but horizontal.  I'm seriously pissed at Zumo; wife loses it completely; we are stuck miles from anywhere in stinking hot temperatures, bike is horizontal and what do we do next..... Luckily along come another couple - walkers - who help lift the bike (with damage, grrrr...), then ask why I was crazy enough to bring the world's heaviest tourer onto a true off-road experience for armoured vehicles.....  I say, in my best French accent "Le Zumo...." and they nod, knowingly!  Off we go again.....................

Hi Jim,

Sorry buddy, but I cannot help but   :)  Amazing routing you had. Have not had an experience nearly as bad as yours, but have had some strange "detours" to nowhere.  These can be reported to the gods of Mapsource who apparently update them each quarter century or so.  Sorry your wife was in tears - have not had that experience on the bike in a VERY long time.  Glad you & she were not hurt. Trying to get to my Mom's house down a street that was closed about a year ago was my latest Zumo adventure.

I will use your "Le Zumo" line next re-routing even though I'm in the states & nobody may understand it.  It's fashionable still to blame the French for stuff, so figure folks will think my Zumo is French & nod like they understand.  I just did 5 routes for my Milwaukee trip & relied on Mapsource - so figure this trip will also be an adventure.
