Hey Jim.......after I got to the end of your story and determined that you were not hurt and the bike suffered minimally, then and only then could I find humor in the story.  As they say:  Been there, Done that.  These heavy touring bikes are great for the hard surface, but not a lot of fun in soft conditions, esp. for those of us that are small/short legs.  ::) har!  spyder

Yes, there's humour in it Spyde - it's tales like that that make the memories!   :)

Question, I create routes on Harley s ride planner and exported into the Zumo.  I went to test the route out and noticed that the routes are broke up into 4 or 5 segments.  Is there a max size for routes?  ???

Not that I'm aware of. :nixweiss: How big (long) are the routes? I usually don't create routes longer then I plan on riding in one day just for ease of picking the route up the next day. I've also never used the H-D Ride Planner to create routes to send to my Zumo.

Just one dayer 500miles.  After riding today and playing around with the route it looks like the segments may pickup at the end of another segment.  We will see.  The HD site is easier (in my opinion) then the map source software.  I dont plan routes that often. Cheers!

I have used both the Harley route planner and Mapsource. They both work but once you learn Mapsource you will use it all the time. The Harley planner is based on Google maps which is easier to move the route around but thats about it. Mapsource is a great program but takes time to learn it. The best way to learn mapsource is go here and read the basics. Then do a couple of test maps and you will be impressed at how easy it really is.
I have over 200 routes planned and also I use tracks a lot when I am just out riding around and then convert them to routes if I think the day or trip is worth saving. Also in Mapsource you have a great option to view your route or portion of a route you are creating in Google Earth to see if the road is paved or dirt. I use this all the time and very seldom do I take a group on a dirt road while on roads I have never traveled.
Either way both programs work great but the Harley planner has some drawbacks that are not in mapsource.

Did you put waypoints/viapoints in the route? That may be the reason for it breaking it up into segments. :nixweiss: Along w/the link that azone14 posted here is another great resource for mapsource - Mapsource Tutorial.

Hey Guys

Need a little info here. On the Tech mount for the Zumo 550 are yall using the short or taller mount? Also are you using the Quick change adapter plate from them also. BTW anyone have a extra thumb screw they'd be willing to part with ? Be more than happy to pay extra & all expenses. THANKS IN ADVANCE.             Linny

Hey Linny, I used the short mount, in the attempt to keep the whole thing as unobtusive as possible hanging up there on a otherwise clean looking bike.  It's just one more of the compromises we have to decide on in the 'comfort' vs. 'style' choice.  8) Doesn't the fellow from Scotland still offer the thumb screws?  :nixweiss: That's the greatest deal 'cause that little screw & special driver about drove me crazy with my bad eyes.  :-[ Ya gotta get  one.  ;) Har.  spyder

Mount - Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars).

Thumbscrew - this post.

Scotland?  Wish I'd known that, Spyd!  I got mine from Ireland!  :P
