Blown 110" (pinion) - Can it happen again?
« on: May 06, 2007, 12:36:53 PM »

Looking through previous posts, I am not alone.   07 SEUC, 3,490 miles, purchased Aug 06.

While heading home to Colorado (returning from Laughlin and a few days in Las Vegas) the oil light came on while zipping along I-40 in AZ -- I shut 'er down immediately.  After a  couple of hours along side the road and a hellish, but expensive, towing adventure, I managed to get to Thunderbird HD in Albuquerque (Formerly Chick's).  Turns out I had broken a gear in the oil pump and pinion was out of tolerance.

My dealer in Colorado told Thunderbird HD to find a freight company, stick it on a pallet, and ship it to them (no mention of what do do with me!).  I called my dealer and they could get to it in 3 weeks or so.   Thunderbird treated me pretty nice, but didn't offer a rental.  Needless to say, I didn't have to think twice about Thunderbird replacing the engine.  It shipped from HD on Friday.

Yes, I will be inconvenienced with a new break-in period, and a return trip to Albuquerque to pick it up, on the other hand, I hope there are some advantages in the form of new generational improvements made to the 110".  I sure don't want to go through this again.

My question to those who have gone through a similar experience with the warranty replacement 110" is: HAS ANYONE GONE THROUGH THIS MORE THAN ONCE??

Did they tell you what caused the pinion gear to be out of alignment? Were the teeth broken, what part of the assembly between the cams and the pinion was out of alignment?

They never said "out of alignment", the words they used were "out of tolerance", and they did not specify the root cause.

I can tell you that the gear inside the oil pump was in two pieces.   They did not tear it down any further - as a new motor was to be ordered.  (They said they had seen this 4 previous times at their sister store in Florida).   Which is why I wonder if this could happen again with the replacement motor.

Bizarre! Have you had your motor worked on prior to this unfortunate blowup?

I've stopped counting how many 110s have been known here to have failed (some catastrophically).  Very sorry for the hassle, congrats on the new motor, certainly hope it doesn't happen again; have to wonder if Harley will ever get a new engine right the first year out the door.

Bizzare, is a good word!   Not really any motor work other that at the 1,000 maintenance mark with a SERT, slip-ons, SE Breather, and some dyno time at my dealer here in Colorado.  Actually it was running perfectly up until the oil light came on when the gear broke.

I know this has happened before, but I am curious if anyone or anyone knows of someone that this has happened to more than once.

Makes me question whether or not I want to jump on the road for Nelson with ~3,500 on the bike.

Running scared - oh yeah!   (which was the reason for my original question).  Once is enough for being stranded far from home, fortunately I was in a cellular service area.  Hopefully, new motor is more reliable!

Thanks for the responses!

It is easy enough to pull the cam cover and check the run-out of the new crank, just for a warm fuzzy.

Not to raise dual concerns; but this particular engine didn't melt down from the (potentially) overheating problem you've been concerned with.  The crank issue is separate and apart from that.  Two bugaboos in these motors.

Very true. My thought process is that checking for an out of tolerance crank can alleviate one of the possibilities. Hopefully a good fuel management device will handle the other.

Good advice on both counts.

Wonder if the Moco is officially using the Microsoft - "debug it in the field but get the darn thing out the door now" as planned policy or just accidental policy?

I do not know for certain if the replacement engine will contain the improvements to prevent this pionion issue from happening again, my post was to find some minor form of security and assurance that none of us have had the replacement engine replaced.  My fingers are crossed!
