Just as long as it stays a small leak, it won't!  :)  It's the devil and the deep blue sea; if the crankases arrive, do I tell them to rebuild, and then set off on a 4500 mile trip with a newly rebuilt and unproven engine, or do I live with the little leak, and set off on the 4500 mile trip hoping it won't get worse....  :nixweiss:

Jim

One of life's mysteries.  Fix it before and have possibly have unexpected problems later or do not fix it and possibly have unintended problems due to it getting worse.

Given the vibration of these engines, I would lean towards getting it fixed before, if possible.  Would ride it anyway if the cases did not arrive in time as you are planning.  It's always something.

Three weeks today till we leave - lets say the cases arrive next week - 2½ weeks left.  Do I let them start - all going well they should finish in a week - and hope that they don't find any unexpected problems during the strip and rebuild, or.....  :nixweiss:  Wish I didn't have this to worry about!!  :(

I have no answer for you except this:

Drink beer.

Does nothing for the case crack situation, but you will not worry as much!

Well, I rang the dealers, and the crankcases arrived on Tuesday.  (Thanks for letting me know guys!) but now we're waiting for the head gaskets to arrive - despite "all the gaskets" being ordered weeks ago.  They should be here next week, and accordingly they aim to start on the engine next Thursday.  I am not confident about this at all. :-(

Me either, Jim.

No head gaskets yet for a job they knew about weeks ago......

Will drink a beer or 3 for ya.

Good luck - something says you will need it.

Well, I put another couple of hundred miles on the bike this weekend, and the leak - not enough to even drip, just a tiny weeping - doesn't seem to be getting any worse.  What worries me is:

1) Do I risk my 4500 mile trip with it as is, hoping it lasts
2) Do I let them start the engine strip and rebuild 2 weeks before I leave, hoping that they find no unexpected problems, and hoping that nothing goes wrong post-rebuild?

Between a rock and a hard place.....  :(

If you choose the second way, you need to be in holidays one week earlier for the tests  :-\

If you choose the first way, think that it's a long ride with very hot weather  :sweatdrop:

Yes, thought long and hard about that Jacques.  On the other hand, if I choose the second way, it might be no ride at all! :-(

Take it as is on the trip. You know what you have and what may happen. Pack some extra sealant and off you go.

Having the motor repaired would be ideal but there isn't enough test ride time in between. Everything will have been apart and that in itself is a gamble.

Any chance of a dealer loaner bike?

That's the way I'm thinking too, Puzz.  I already have the loaner bike, (from HD, not the dealer) but it's the standard black Ultra like the hire bikes, and though it's done just 3000 miles, it's a bucket. And, TBH, I have $56000 in my CUSE, which I want all the nice folks in Europe to admire, not have sitting back here!

Anyone else care to vote on which choice I should make? :confused5:
