Can not get clutch to disengae
« on: May 18, 2007, 07:00:51 PM »

Hi Picked up my new red bike yesterday, the pictures do not do it justice. After reading all the negative posts I was leary of bringing the bike home Glad I did not a problem in the 150 mile trip. That was yesterday; Today I can not get the bike into netrul and can not pull the clutch in far enough to totally get first gear to disengage, any one else have this problem? The dealer said they would look at it when i am next in town but there is no adjustment. If you have had this problem does the engagment point wear in over time.
Darn I hate to say anything bad, this Bike is totally different than my O4 roadking and I like it. Does the ultra clasic have a different rake than the road kings? I feel like I am on a cushy sport bike.

Welcome to the site! and congrats on the new bike.

Are you trying to use the clutch with the bike running? Even with the clutch in when the bike is not running it can be really hard to roll in gear. Your dealer is correct that there is not an adjustment with the hydro clutches. You can however have air in the line that would cause things to be wierd. Does the lever collapse all the way to the grip?

Yes the handle squeezes all the way to the handle. Rode it again late this afternoon and was able to get netrual, but still could feel clutch draging at stops in first gear, have to keep brake on wondering now if it could be a heat related problem 45 degrees this mornings ride 85 tonight. Have an all day ride of 300 miles tomorrow so should see hot and cold weather to see if it makes a difference.
thanks

The thing you want to check immmediately is the hydraulic line going into the clutch case. Mine was a bit loose, and let air in the line.  I also lost a bit of clutch fluid. Stopped me cold, could not get out of gear, or neutral. Without a good seal, the hydraulics will not do their thing.  Follow the line into it just to the rear of the rider footpeg.

If it is loose, this will happpen.  Must have been missed at delivery.  Anyway, make sure NO DOT4 fluid got on your paint.  If you need to bleed it, see the zerk type fitting on the top?  You can loosen it carefully, and have someone pull in the clutch to get rid of the air. Also, you can take off the top of the fluid cover, only while the bike make this particular container level, and fill it carefully.  Cannot stress the careful part. Keep it clean.. dot4.

Good stuff above. But, are you new to the hydraulic clutch? Took some getting used to for me, same symptoms but maybe not as severe. Couple of rides and I got used to it. If you can't, the air in the system just might be the answer.

My clutch did the same and after bleeding and tightening the fittings it was resolved.

Yes, my first Hyd clutch, however, the key word was "have to keep brake on"., tells me it is not disengaging.  If I remember, level is critical also for displacement too.  Let's wait for what Mr. Henrie sees and go from there.  For me, when it happened, I had not a clue. Took a dealer road trip to save me ASAP. Kudos on that one went to Savannah Harley.

It is also important not to fill the reservoir to the top. It needs room for expansion as when the clutch wears additional fluid will be pushed up into the reservoir. There is a max fill line about 1/4" below the top.

Thanks for all the recommendations, will check levels before trip today. found a way to get into netrul, if I shift out of gear prior to stopping (still coasting) it goes in fairly easy.
have a great weekend

Do the 07's have the shifter paw adjustment? Adjusting this correctly allows you drop in and out of neural easily.

As an aside, this is what was happening to my bike on Saturday prior to the breakdown.  Clutch wasn't disengaging all of the way and it shifted really poorly.  20 miles later I was getting towed off of the highway...

First I wish you luck jmhenrie, My seeg is perfect but I've had this problem with my sefb since it was new. I have had it to three different dealers and have had the fluid flushed bled, oil changed and I have learned to live with it sorry to say. Mine probably isn't as bad as yours but my bike is hard to get in neutral from an idle, and sometimes impossible unless you roll it slightly. I know others have had a lighter spring put in but I would rather live with the problem than a solution like that. I have the assumption in my case the pressure plate is not releasing evenly but since having it to three different dealers since new it seems I will just have to fix it on my own one day with no more fight left for this. Sorry for the negativity here but it gets depressing when you pick up your bike and they say they didn't find anything wrong. Now I know the problem is not totally the dealer as the moco wont pay a claim and even if they do they will not pay the time it takes to fix it.
