I went from a '04 Road King Classic to my current '06 SE Ultra.  The first thing I notice about the SE Ultra last year was how hot it was.  It was frying my thighs.  While installing the V&H Dresser Dual and Ovals along with the Ness Big Sucker and a properly tuned PowerCommander, it was still hot during the summer when temps exceeded 85 degrees.  I found the solution:  Remove the lower fairings!  Man, what a difference.  I rode the rest of the summer without the lowers, put them back on in the fall.

This is my first bike with lower fairings and they really seem to hold the heat in, even with the vents opened.  I'm sure that is why rbmntx thought the Se Ultra was so hot coming off the RK.

Smiler,
Right now I'm running Syn3, but at the 5000 mile service I'm probably going to go to AMSOil through HD-Dude.  He's got a good price/quart for forum members.

Today's temp was 89 and ambient air guage in the fairing said just over 100.  I just got back from a trip up to one of the local dealerships to get my HOG pin for Rolling Thunder...when I got to the dealership, my temp was at 228 that was with stopping only at traffic lights and for the most part going at least 35 mph.  Lowers and fairing wings were open.  When I was coming home I got caught in some heavy traffic and doing a lot of idling at traffic lights.  When I pulled into the garage and checked the temp right after shutting down, I was at 267.  I was starting to feel some heat coming up at me from the rear cylinder towards the end, but not real annoying.  Hopefully, that will be alleviated somewhat when I put the HD mid-frame heat shields on when they get here.  The HD fairing wings (which I think are made by Kuryakyn for HD) work great.  It's amazing how much difference there is in air flow when you open them bad boys up.  I was impressed.  Well worth the money.
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Red,

I had those fairwings in my hot little hand this a.m., but put them back.  Not sure how they would look on the ole bike.  By any chance can you post a pic of yours both closed and open?

Thanks,

CB,
Depending on which set of duals you go with.  If you get non-stepped, like the Vance & Hines, your low-end torque will be about the same or better depending on what you put on for mufflers.  If you put the stepped headers on, like the Rhineharts or the Bassanis, you will lose a little low end torque, as they come on a little later than the non-stepped pipes do, but will gain some hi-end horsepower.  It depends on what you want.  I wanted the torque to come on strong on the lower end without having to add a different set of cams yet, so I went with the non-stepped headers.  I don't play much, if ever, up around 5500 rpms, so the extra high-end ponies didn't mean anything to me.  My torque with the Vance and Hines setup that I have (duals and oval mufflers), peaks out at just a tad under 108 lb/ft torque at just around 2800-2900 rpms, right where I play most of the time.  So it's perfect for me.

Red,

If I go with the duals, it will be the same as yours, the V & H headers to go with my ovals.  I want to see how she runs over I get the 1000 mile service.    If it still runs hot, I will switch to the TD's and get her retuned.

CBM,
These aren't the best pictures...I just took them in the garage...they'll give you somewhat of an idea of what they look like.

CB,
Getting your AFR down to a reasonable range should cool the bike down a lot for you.  The duals will remove the heat that you suffer on your right leg by taking away the cross over pipe...I was impressed with the lack of thigh burning heat when stuck in traffic this afternoon...that was nice not to feel like my leg was on fire.

In a previous post I noted that last week in Myrtle Beach waiting to get into the HD dealership, the temperature of my SERK registered 288.  From what I have read, the synthetic is good until around 300.  I thought my jeans were smoking.  I guess I'll go to the V&H headers to alleviate that problem.  Most of the time it reads just under 230.  I guess that is why HD has that optional firmware upgrade that shuts down the rear cylinder to avoid overheating.

Thanks for the photos Red.  I really appreciate it.

As I have not had her on the dyno yet, I do not know my AFR, but I have had the initial download of map 84, so it should be much better than stock.  I'll have to really consider the TD's and the fairing wings.  Hell, what's a few more bucks...

Hi Devil - Would you say the heat is more of a problem with the SEUC rather than the SERK.
Hopefully I pick my bike up on Tuesday, I noticed in the literature they mention you can get something done with the rear cylinder if you are expecting to do a lot of stop/start driving. It' probably a MoCo extra but has anyone taken them up on it.

Smiler,
I would probably have to say that yes, the SEUCs probably run a little hotter than the SERKs, but for no other reason than the SEUC has lowers and that helps to trap heat in around the riders legs.  Fortunately, the newer models have the vented lowers, and what a difference they make!  :)  On my 02 the lowers were not vented and so it got really warm in the summer.  Today, coming back from Rolling Thunder, it was 92 degrees out...I had the lower vents wide open and the fairing wings open...BIG difference.  It was much cooler riding...and with all the stop and start riding I did coming home, when I measured the temp on my oil immediately after shutting down it was only 255 degrees.  So the vented lowers do help.  Some of the members will even take their lowers off during the summer months.  I don't want to do that because it's part of the "look" of the SEUC, but that's just me.

I agree with Red -- I like the look of the lowers and also have egoodies'  cd pocket on left side and door lock on right side.  I just remove the doors in the summer!

I removed my lowers about a week after I got the bike home.  I do like the look they provide, but with the hot weather down here, and the issues with the heat these engines produced, I think they will stay off until about October.

I do like the fact the bike looks less like a Geezer Glide (sorry to my more mature bretheren here..I'm only in my mid 40's ;D) with the lowers removed.  I also like the additional room to stretch out.

I do miss the extra storeage they provided, but have to take care of the heat issues, so it is a small sacrifice.

Trying to get out of DC after riding in the parade, the traffic was HORRIBLE and we kept getting hung up. Finally plotted a course through Georgetown. We set out, but with a 4-way stop on every street, all of our motors were COOKING. We pulled over to let them cool down, and two bikes, mine included, read 266 oil temp.
