Need more zip for my 07 FLHRSE3
« on: May 28, 2007, 10:25:37 PM »

I have a 07 FLHRSE3, can anyone tell me what the stock cam is and recommend which way to go for a little more zip. She is currently sporting V&H true duals with slip on ovals. I am tired of getting dusted by my friends 95 in Edelbrock kit. I also have the power commander PCIII usb installed. I am getting stories of a 257 or 258 needed. What would be the difference and what would the two different cams effect?

If they happen not to see your thread send messages to Ghost Rider and Hoist.  Travis (Ghost Rider) has already done cam and a bit of other work to his 110 and seems to have gotten very positive results.  Hoist is in the homework phase of the task right but has discussed the different cam options with the shop that will be doing the work.  So either should be able to offer some informed opinions.  Howie will break his when it's done.  But not to worry.  It won't be the bike's fault.

The stock cam is a SE 255 and is an EPA spec.  The 3 SE cams that I've had recommended are the 251/257/258  the specs are  in order:

In Open/ Close  Exh. Open/Close  Intake/Ex Duration      In Lift/Exh. Lift

18/46                   56/14              244/250                       .579 /.579
24/48                    59/21               252/260                       .569/.569
26/52                  65/23                258/268                       .569/.569

Hey RK218,

I went with the SE251 cams based on my dealers recommendation.  Overall I am very pleased with the cams and other work that I had done.  My dyno sheet is posted on SERK thread if you want to have a look.  Also, feel free to send me a PM if you have any specific questions.

Later,
Ghost

If using a Se cam is the only option ( which of course we know it is not) then you have a few options. The 251 or 257. Really there is a ton of power in the head that needs to be let out. With some proper porting and setting of squish you will see some very good gains, add a better cam and the gains go up. Again having a tune will help even the stockers.  We are currently doing a set of heads for a  HD shop in Canada ( bike is the service managers personal bike) with welding on the head to help with velocity, speeding up the air is a huge help with that head, as well setting the proper squish, the stock piston is not the best shape but it can be modified to work much much better.   Once that is done you will gain much faster response from the engine see cooler running temps , due to properly set up heads with increased VE. These 110 are great engines with some help they only get better.  ;)

Staying Harley try the 251 cam if your not willing to upgrade the bike to 10.25 compression if so then you may want to try the stage 2 kit which comes with the 260 cam.

If you don't mind going outside of harley the next question is do you like higher rev running or low end torque.   If you want higher end try the 3000 up go with the freedom cam.   You can also go with the Woods 77 cam with the plus 4 degree gear which will help move the power curve down.

If you want the low end pulling up to say 4400 then try the Zippers cam just depends where you want it to run.   All of these are bolt in.   You can even use the Freedom cam with stock push rods or you can buy the SE perfect fit.

This is all going to depend how far you want to go.

If you decide to go to the stage 2 you might also consider going with the screaming eagle 50mm throttle body.

The 260 cam in a 110 is too much in my opinion, timing duration on that cam require a large amount of compression to enable that cam to have any kind of good low end power. It will end up being a upper rpm cam. That cam at 10.8-11.2 compression, and head work and still the cam would be a mid range to top end. But you get a much better low end tq curve. There are much better cams to choose from for a bagger.

Hey Steve, I can back that statement up with actual builds. We have done a few 110" Stage II here and you are right. You have to rev the he** out of them. The Softail guys are ok with it but in a bagger there will be better choices for sure.

We are waiting on the results on my bike (not very patiently by the way)  ;) before building up any more big bikes.
Around these parts, touring bikes are King and we need a way to make them go!!

I agree.  Hoist (Howie) is possibly one of the smarter folks in this realm.

Your parts are coming along nicely. Heads are welded been to heat treat, and porting is almost done, and they will be back to you very soon. You cannot rush perfection, HA HA . They are looking great, and I wish I could be there when you get to take this for a ride.
