OK, I picked the bike up on Friday from the dealer...they said they relocated the antenna .... and it works a lot better. When I'm on the open road I have no problems. If I'm under trees or near a lot of trees I lose the signal. When I pull into our development I lose the signal ... there are a lot of trees.

Ed

Where did they relocate it to? I lost reception going down I95 a 4 lane Interstate highway!!! Yeah, there were trees in sight. But c'mon, on a highway?!?

My reception mirrors that of ekacsuta and my antenna is in the stock location on the left side. I did try to pry the antenna off of the little mount so I could try to improve things. Don't do it!!!!! The glue holding it to the bracket is stronger than the antenna assembly. I didn't breat anything, but I'm sure I was close.

Pryed mine off without issue. It's stuck on there with the 3M type tape.  Might try heating it up with a hair dryer a bit before prying with a large, flat bladed screwdriver.  As I said, I moved it to the top of the radio with no better reception than on the bracket.  Getting it outside the fairing makes a HUGE difference...it doesn't look bad at all sitting on top of the leather dash, dead center, and mine very rarely loses a signal now.

Can you attach a pic of what it looks like on the dash?

They said they moved it to the front edge up with the radio/CB chassis and attached it there with some heavy duty industrial velcro. They said it's almost above the headlight.

That's where I had mine for a while...it didn't help a damn bit, and might have actually made it worse.  I'll see if I can find a pic.

Go here, and look at reply number 8

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=9584.0

I run the little wire between the inner fairing and windshield, with a bit of foam tape over the wire to help cushion it...barely noticable.  If you pulled the leather dash off, it would be easy to make a hole in the inner for the wire, but the plug end is rather large, so it would be a 1/4" hole or more, and I chose not to drill a hole in my innner, even if it's covered up with the leather dash.  I stuck it to the dash with double sided tape.  Velcro would work as well.

Here's the difference it made: I pull my bike out of the basement, but next to the brick wall of my house, and I have some rather large, overhanging trees there too.  Before, I could NEVER pick up XM while washing/detailing the bike in that area of the driveway.  Now...NO PROBLEM.  About the only time I lose signal now is going under an overpass, or if I'm down in a steep, narrow hollow.

I posted a picture of the xm antenna on the dash of my roadglide about a year ago.  If I could retrieve it for you I would.  Simply center it and place it at the intersection of the windscreen and inner fairing.  Since my fairing and antenna are black it blends right in and in fact can't be seen while sitting on the bike.  My reception has been perfect even while cleaning the bike in the garage with the door closed.

Ed, don't listen to him. He has an '06. That little black thingy would just not look right on our beautifully painted black and orange '07's.  ;D

I noticed much more XM failure after I used glare on the fairing. Must block more of those pesky sat signals.  A sure fix would be to cut a hole over the antenna in the fairing, so it could 'see' the sky without interference.  Or use high grit rubbing compound to get rid of the paint in same area.

I would imagine that the fairing fiberglass, and the paint, and the clear coats have something to do with it for sure.  Easy way to find out is use 2lanes method. That makes the most sense, but involves like 10 minutes of time and some tape.  The other option I find usefull is to wear aluminum foil, so I just made a fashionable aluminum foil head piece, and xm works very nicely now.

Rhino, that hole idea wouldn't work. It would cause too much drag decreasing top end speed.
