1,000 Service Check Points
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:56:32 PM »

With the list of issues that have been discussed here relative to our lovely 110 engines, I would like some additional/direction advice on what we need to cover with the dealer relative to the 1,000 mile service on my SEUC.  I have my service set up for this Friday, June 8th.

This may help those who follow get a good gauge on what they need to point out to have checked ( in addition to the normal 1,000 maintenance items).

Here is what I have so far;

1) Tapping noise from top of engine - Check rocker box for proper clearance of valve springs  (Chief has a good thread on this in the 110 engine section http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12405.0)
2) Check cylinder head gaskets for leaks, especially the rear!

What else should we add to this list that is unique to our bikes, or these 110 Engines!!  What else have we determined that it is just a matter of time until something breaks for fails?

I would like to get as much checked as possible so I quit worrying so much :P

Note: My oil will be Mobil One.  Can anyone recommend anything special for the trans. fluid or should I just go with M1 in all 3?

John,
What you been doin, man?  I just got cleared by the doc a bit over a week ago and I'm already dropping mine off Wed this week for the 1000 mile service ;D.    Just ribbin' you, friend.
I'm using AMSOIL in the top end, Redline MTL in the primary and Redline Shockproof Heavy in the tranny.
Agree with your two items for sure.  I haven't had any issues thus far.  Do have a good deal of "noise" from the top end.  I haven't noticed the tranny noise (5th gear) to the extent that others on the forum have indicated - but my hope is the Shockproof will ensure I don't START hearing it.
I don't have any leakage in the head gasket - yet.  Guess we'll wait and see.
True duals and SERT are going on and will get to dyno as soon as I get the bike back.  For now I'm staying with the stock mufflers.  I'm "okay" with the sound at this point and everyone tells me they'll be louder with the TDs.  Listened to Howie's (Hoist) when he "blew" through Virginia a while back and liked the sound, but still having a bit of an issue with the look.  I'll see how the sound and performance are post 1K service and dyno.
If they "uncover" anything during my service and let me know before your Friday appt, I'll let you know.
Good luck - be safe,
Tony

You've nailed the two major issues well. You don't need to ask the service tech to check the head gasket, get a flashlight and shine it right below the exhaust port of the rear cylinder. You can easily tell if it is starting to leak. I noticed mine at 1,800 miles while most others are discovered later than that. If you see oil, they will replace at least that gasket for you. Some have gotten both changed. I would complain about the top-end noise and tell them what the problem is and how to fix it. You'll really appreciate the noise being gone.

Other than that, I don't know of anything else they could check over and above the std. items.

Good luck.

It's seems that friday is a popular date for initial service. Mine goes in Fri too. Unfortunately, my dealer doesn't follow this board so he says no problems with the 110 engine that he has been made aware of. I  guess HD is not feesing up to some imperfections !  :(Will be taking the rocker covers off too as I have that aggrivating tick and tapping noise from thr top end . Also wanted to pull the primary cover as I feel there is lots of noise in there too (hopefully it's not the tranny). :'( Looking forward to seeing what's going on in the rockers, as thankfully the dealer does not mind customer liasing with the mechanic ( good tech, but ham-fisted) as work is being done.  Question, is there any fear or concern that if problems with retainers striking the rocker box's are present, that there would be metal chips through the engine? :nixweiss:

I hear you on the mileage.  This stupid thing called work keeps getting in the way.  That, and the boat load of rain we have had the last 30 days.

Thanks for the response and I'll keep an eye on the post to see what you find out.

BTW, where do you buy your Redline from?  Local or chain store.  I may try it in mine if I can find some before Friday.

Chief,

This dealer is in Wichita Falls, TX (120 miles away).  The service manager is great, but they have not sold too many CVO's.  I would guess the chances are slim that he has heard of this rocker box issue yet.  I can also try my local HD dealer this one cannot or will not solve the problem.

KentuckyHarleyDude (Bubba,) You there?  Anything you can add ;D?

Hey John. Also. make sure you don't have metal or gear teeth in the Primary when you drain it. There are bad heat-treated starter ring gears that break teeth. I haven't heard of that many, but I had it. Check all your electronics and make sure everythings functioning properly. These, and the previous 2 issues are what I'm dealing with right now. Haven't heard of much else. Good luck.

John,
Firedood gave me the address of a distributor in Gordonsville, VA.  Good folks.  But shipping would be ridiculous to TX.  They've got a website that should find someone closer for you.

Go on the Redline website and find a dealer close to you...I found the Redline products at a local Honda Car repair center, and at the local BMW/Ducati/Triumph dealer.

If I had it to do over, I've have 'em check the oil cooler lines for chaffing.  May as well.  No sense in learning the hard way. :2vrolijk_21:

CB,
I, I guess very fortunately, didn't have any of the problems you stated during my thousand mile service.  I still don't have any loud clattering coming from the rocker boxes, just the normal that I experienced with my '02.  I can hear them chattering, but they're not overly loud.  The only annoyance I've had so far is the 5th gear whine, but I'm sure that will lessen at my 5K service as I'm going to drop Syn3 totally out of the bike and go with AmsOil or Mobil 1 V-Twin.  I've read that even putting Mobil 1 or Amsoil in the tranny will quiet things down quite a bit.  You can safely run Mobil 1 in all three areas if you're up to doing that.  I like running the same in all three spots...easier to carry around one lubricant then three, if something should happen.  I have just under 3K on the odometer and haven't seen any seepage on the rear cylinder yet.  I talked to the service manager at my dealership Monday if they had had any problems with the 110's yet on oil seepage or rocker box clearance issues.  He said no, but then again they haven't seen that many 110's and he said most of the owners of 07's SEs they have sold have the same amount of mileage, or less, then what I have, so they haven't heard of any problems other than the heat, but he said most of all of us left the dealership with new pipes and headers when we bought the bikes.  He told me to keep an eye on the head gasket and if I do have a problem give them a call and they'll replace it...he just told me though to give them enough heads up to get the gaskets in as they don't carry many 110 parts in stock yet.

Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Thanks for the ideas on the Redline.  I'll check it out.

Red,

Good on ya man!  Hopefully yours is top notch.  I think (hope) I have a few thousand miles on mine before it starts acting up.  At least long enough to get me to the 2008's ;D

John,
Dropped the Jester at the dealer last night.  I'd checked the rear jug before I went down - no detectable seepage.  Mentioned it to the service writer, he noted it anyway.  Told him about the rocker box tapping.  Started her up, he heard it.  Asked the service manager to come out and check - he heard it.  My "favorite" mechanic was walking by and said - "what the hxxl is that?"  I told them what I'd heard from the folks here and suggested they may want to check with the MOCO on the "issue".  If there's a problem, I'm confident they'll fix it.  No phone calls today to advise me of any other issues.  If I hear anything tomorrow - I'll post here.
Good luck,
Tony

True duals and SERT are going on and will get to dyno as soon as I get the bike back.  For now I'm staying with the stock mufflers.  I'm "okay" with the sound at this point and everyone tells me they'll be louder with the TDs.

True duals with stock mufflers?  Interesting, I'd not thought of that.  Has anyone tried it?  If so, what's you opinion as a first step?  I think I would add a K & N and the SERT as well initially.  Second step would be better mufflers and dyno tuning.
