DIRTY REAR
« on: January 02, 2005, 09:21:42 PM »

Has anyone noticed a thick "dust" from the exhaust after each ride? Its all over the bags and tour pack. I think my bike is running rich or somrthing. It looks like I have ridden threw volcanic ash for miles [smiley=furious.gif] [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]  [smiley=worthless.gif]  Please feel me in
Thanks in advance

You will most probably find that in fact it is brake dust.....check your rear wheel and swingarm for a comparison.

You may also want to check this thread, 2uece: http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=eg_gen;action=display;num=1101845970;start=  Baggers are more "dust prone" than other models.  Please don't take this as trying to insult your intelligence, but it may just be dirt from the road you're seeing. If you ever have the opportunity to ride even 2 blocks down a dirt road, you will have your answer. [smiley=dier_13.gif]

It is BRAKE DUST, if it bothers you change to one of the many "dustless" brake pads that were mentioned THE LAST TIME THIS TOPIC WAS TALKED ABOUT A FEW MONTHS AGO. Someone even went out and rode his bike 100 miles, never touched the rear brake and had no dust, I just changed to DP pads, now only normal road dust, no black residue on everything on back of bike.

Different mufflers will leave different exhaust patterns out the back.  When I had the stock mufflers on mine for the first few tank fulls I didn't notice any heavy amount of carbon splatter back there.  Though the normal dirt and dust and brake dust were all about everywhere you'd expect them to be.

I swapped on the White Brothers E Series mufflers and they arrived before a little simple to install accessory cone that I like to use that works with them.  Not being patient I went ahead and put the mufflers on.  Their exit baffle design is such that you can't help but getting exhaust splatter pretty much all over the back fo the bags, on the fender and even on the tour pak.  Couple weeks later the pair of accessory cones to cover the baffles got here and then all was good again.

Whatever it is (road dust, brake dust, exhaust dust???) I first noticed it on my first Ultra Classic, then my second and now the SEEG.  I think that we just happen to notice it more on the baggers due to the hard bags and much more painted surface......either that or it attaches itself more, due to the air flow that the hard bags create.  Over the past seven or eight years that I've been riding baggers, I've kind of gotten used to it.

Sounds like a normal bagger to me,  has to do with the bags and air flow.

At the risk of posting a product that may be "yesterday's news" to some, I will comment on a product that has allowed me to keep my "dirty rear" much cleaner with much less work.  Undoubtably, many of you have used the S100 product Total Cycle Cleaner when getting to those unreachable places when washing your scoot.  Recently, I was a "guinea pig" for a relatively new S100 product called, simply enough, S100 Paste Wax.  The product is a refined carnauba wax that applies as easy as a liquid, but has the darndest shine and staying power that I've come across.  It's very easy to use as you coat the painted on chrome surface and buff it while still semi wet with a detailing cloth.  No residue, powder or stains on any rubber that you might come in contact with.  For clean up (such as the nasties on the bags and rear end) a quick squirt with the hose and blow dry and it's clean and glossy again with a lasting wet look.  Best I've ever used despite the relatively pricey retail of $16.00 a jar.  Before anybody jumps to the wrong conclusion, I'm not selling S100 products nor do I own any stock in the importers company, but I will as soon as it is available. Yep, I have the same experience and did the same thing BLM did. I found a high quality carnauba wax that keeps a lot of the dust from accumulating and makes it really easy to remove. Zymol has some really good quality canauba waxes that work well for this purpose. Same procedure as BLM mentioned, rub on and wipe off before it dries. I use the Concours wax by Zymol but they have various formulas for any budget. I don't have any particular ties to Zlymo either but they offer waxes with the highest percentage of carnauba that I have found. http://www.zymol.com
