Midwest Alternative
« on: June 17, 2007, 06:57:42 PM »

The Chicago area has at least one good option for an engine builder.
I have waited to post untill I had some time for shakedown on my new 113. Also be aware that I am in no way other then customer, affiliated with the following engine builder.
Hemi-Design out of Cicero Ill.
I started my build on 07 road glide by contacting several engine builders inc. the more famous out of town ones. When I asked how long they warranty their work--reply was 90 days.(what a joke) I talked to Ron the boss from Hemi he said he was about 65 and would stand behind his work while he was still kicking.
They only build one way. If you are going with big power it is timkin, weld & balance crank gear drive cams with good bearings etc. The mechanic Bill is totally meticulous about his work.
Project started last fall and could have been done a little quicker but in fairness many parts for 07s were either unavalable or not developed yet.
When completed the bike ran like a raped ape . It did like all 110-113 run a bit hot and also pinged to much when hot. They checked , said no good tuned retuned replaced a bad daytona twintech tuned and retuned . Bike still gets warm but only pings if I really lug it.
No they don't walk on water but it was a better experience then most. ( I have had other engines built succesfully with other builders )
First real trip is next week - N Georgia, dragon ,Blue Ridge , smokies etc. Will post again after bigger milage.
Bottom line I once again learned a great deal on this project and I would highly recommend Hemi to anyone especially if they don't want to travel or ship to east or west coast.

mroot,

Did Hemi tune the bike?   What was method of tuning was used SERT/PC/ Other?

Any idea what the build produced for power?   Was this all stock parts or was there headwork done as well?

The bike had hemi's high flow head 11.3 -1 valves springs roller rockers 56mm throttle bdy and more. Daytona twintec ecm. Hemi set up and tuned twintec on their own edyflo dyno. hp 132 tq 126. These numbers were at first dissapointing to me . My 103 with it's mods had originally dynoed at 119 tq 112 hp. was on a different dyno. Yesterday ran 103 on hemi dyno for apple to apple compare 108 tq 98 hp. I now realize that dyno numbers are only relative . 103 runs great (fast) and has for over 17000 mi since i built it. 113 is in a whole different league. The dyno thing was why i waited to post. I had seen much better nos on other 113 posts . Now I realize the dyno the dyno operater etc skew results widely. By the way Hemi took two firsts and a second at the last daytona big bike shoot out.

Here is the update on my build both good and bad.
Put on 2500 miles lots of twisties high rpm. Also cruiseing on interstate to get to good riding. Milage hwy 40 avg milage twisties 35. The bike ran hot and had pinging. It also used oil. That is the bad news. The good is upon my return I took it right over to Hemi. They immeadiately responded and were more concerned then me. As soom as they heard about oil consumption they were all over it. They tore down the engine ( on thier nickle )like they were solving a mystery. Final result was Harley strikes again. The harley head gaskets which they used were both leaking oil "into" the jugs , Lowering the octane ,causing pinging , heat issues, and using oil. This also caused other engine issues which hemi remidied at the time. They totally rebuilt the top of the engine as new (used cometic head gaskets )and it is now up and running. It is now producing more hp and tq then first time. 136 & 124. I rode it briefly by their shop and can't definately say it is perfect untill I get it hot and put a few miles on it. I did however intentionally lug it etc. and could not make it ping. Power is awesome. I will put on a few hundred miles this weekend and then in a week I will leave for colo ,utah nev cal and back. Another 7 thousand miles or so should tell the tale.
I have to say Hemi takes their product seriously and treats their customers with respect.

Great to hear a story like this mrb! That bike must ride great too. What head gaskets did you replace them with? Did all the pinging go away now? Good luck with it and enjoy the HP! ;) Hoist! 8)

Thanks for the well wishes. Yah the bike rides great-it's a road glide set up as an ultra. I typically put 12-15000mi per year. I will know tomorrow if all pinging is definately gone. I am calling in well and going rideing. If it is gone the engine should run forever the way they built it. If not back to the drawing board. I think it will be O K now because this time they were able to tune it as they normally would for a performance eng. Last time we had to back off timing and make it run pretty rich and it still pinged easily. On my brief test ride I could not get it to ping. On a longer ride it will get a bit hotter and that is when I will know for certain. I will post results.

110 mofo-cal is a sure thing if I don't blow it up. I do have my 04 se ready to go just in case.

Took it out today and beat the snot out of it. The bike loved it . You can now ride it like a citizen, an outlaw or anywhere in between. No pinging whatsoever and awesome power.
Now I have to bust Hemi design's chops about why they needed two trys. Yah it was the Harley head gaskets.
