One thing I have found using the monitoring featire in Zippers system is that the heads get hot while sitting still, but cool off rather quickly once the bike starts moving. I have had the heads get up to 325 degrees, the Engine Light comes on, and the idle drops indicating Zippers heat management, but once the bike starts moving and the hot air is pushed away, the head temps drop right down to 275-280. On the other hand, if the oil temp does not drop as quick.

Took a 900 mile trip and the temp ran about 230* average and in very slow 5 mph traffic it went as high as 280*. Pinged like hell when it got hot! But once I got moving, cooled down pretty quickly and the pinking did the same. Anyway, just my two cents worth. Glad I'm running synthetic oil. Every little bit has to help.

I must say I am glad I have an 06 with the 103 vs 110.  Live in AZ and had a bad experience with holiday traffic heading up into our White Mountains just before Payson.  Stop and go all the way from Rye to Payson and the heat build up was like sitting on an open camp fire!  I had installed the digital oil stick and had a problem earlier with it comming loose with oil comming out over the pipes.  No problems with that since so I must not have had it seated properly.
Anyway, I could not get enough speed straddling the lines on the highway so I pulled over to check the temp; this was after all the pinging had started!  Over 300 degrees!
Fortunately the narrow strip along the highway was asphalt instead of our AZ mixture of Clay and grit so I took a chance and cruised up the side just to get up to 35 MPH.  Fortunately no police but I could not believe some of the cars!  Some would start to pull to the right to cut me off!  When I got to Payson I pulled over to check the temp and was running a little over 275.  At higher speeds and a little "Monsoon" cool down further up the road, all was back to normal.

I'd be worried if it gets near 300F.  Harley's EITMS system (parade mode) kicks in at 300 and starts doing things to your bike (if you've enabled it).

From 300 to 320, it will reduce the idle RPM from 1000 to 900.  At 320, it goes down to 800.  At 330, the engine will skip firing every 8 ignitions.

At 340F, the engine will stop (if you're not moving).

Hey Troy, good info.......but, how does the EITMS know if you're 'moving'?

Do you mean you are going to intentionally put your machine into heat management mode?  To the point that it stops running?  Brother, I'm not so sure I could do that.  I get the willies when my oil temp gets up to 240 in traffic.  That means head temps are about 310.  I get all sorts of nasty thoughts flowing through my mind at that point...........and all I can do is pray that traffic starts moving faster.  Best to ya, Bro, and please let us know how it works out. :2vrolijk_21:

Just one more reason I don't go to places like that anymore.  Not only is it hard on the machine, but it generates ALOT of excess stomach acid, and I REALLY hate that.

Henry<-----------Worry Wart, which is a result of 22 years of rotary wing aviation experience and constant worry about when all those parts flying in close proximity to each other are going to have a midair with themselves.

All this talk amuses me...especially because I am reading this thread after I read the too many miles thread.   :huepfenlol2:  All of you guys are putting tens of thousands of miles on bikes that have better tech than their predecessors yet we panik WAAAAYYY more about things that we prolly knew nothing about (whew???good thing) back in the good ole days.  The problem with high heat is that it wears down parts quicker...I just read about the guy with 500K miles who prolly never knew what his oil temp was...and you guys will probably replace what every part would have worn out before it does anyway!!!

Yeah, well, there's a certain amt. of truth to the worrywart syndrome we all suffer from, but we've always had it to an extent.....the real truth is:  these air/oil cooled engines do suffer more than the old ones due to the much higher temps. that they endure today......the wonderful enviro reqmts. and such!  Of course, now we've got better tech w/ syn oil and all.  I just ordered my IR Thermometer so I can really join in the heat obsessions w/ y'all.  har!  spyder

I Believe that water boils at 212deg F or 100deg C @ SEA LEVEL

AT higher altitudes the water boils at lower temps....the higher above sea level...the lower the temp water will boil....

Hence, it takes longer to cook an egg in Denver than in New Orleans.
