Tour-Pak

Bummer, when out to the shop to get in quick ride in before work, quick click of the key fob and nothing. Glanced at the security lite, nothing. Unlocked the ignition, nothing. Battery was dead as a door nail.
I don't remember who said it recently, but the culprit was the tour-pak lite. Raised and lowered it several times (maybe 20) before it stuck on. Its now un pluged and removed.
Riders, beware!!

Thanks, Michael

I'd described the same thing a month or so back.  At that time another couple of guys described having had the same problem.  I was lucky in that I noticed the light on during (I think) the second evening I had the bike.  But the battery wasn't dead yet.

I picked up a replacement light and tinkered.  Opened and closed the lid over and over.  About one time in twenty it stayed on too.  So I just removed it and forget about it.  Never wanted to worry about walking out of some hotel room on a two lane road on the outskirts of some little Arizona town some Sunday morning only to find a dead battery because the tour pak light had tried to be on all night long.

Y'know, I don't ever remember a hood light or a trunk light on four wheeled vehicle giving me this problem.  But it seems almost systemic with this HD light.  Yet another time when the Motor Company doesn't quite give us the quality we paid for.  Damn it's a good thing I really like these bikes  [smiley=brood.gif] .

It sucks that the technology has been around that long, costs the consumer as much as it does and it has that quality of operation.

Can't say that I have had that problem, but why not put a toggle switch in series with the light or even an additional micro switch on the hinged door.  It seems a shame to loose the light.  I know it came in real handy when I had my Ultra on long trips. Seems I was always running out of a motel room to grab something out of the tourpak when it was dark.

I had the light stay on twice, didn't run the battery down because I use a battery tender ever time I pull into the garage, but both times i noticed tender charging for hours instead of minutes. Learned now to peak inside as it closes. To handy in daylight savings area to disconnect.  We have both become so aware of it now, we check every time.

I think I posted on the other thread concerning this issue......I had this problem on one of my Ultra Classics.  I keep two flashlights (both the mini mag type, but two different sizes) in the pocket of the lid organizer.  It's never been a problem for me, since.  And now I don't have to mess with wiring to my tour pack when I remove it at the different run sites or at home.

I would recommend some of the led sets that the "HD-DUDE" has in another thread. run em with 3 microswitches and you are done and don't have to guess if the MoCo got it right and the material cost will be less than half of what you local dealer will charge.

I seem to have the problem also, but didn't realize it was the light. When the bike sat for a day or 2 it would turn over slow like a bad battery. When I took the tour pak off, it started ok...thought it was cause I was riding more. Last time I used the tour pak, the lite wouldn't come on...Im gonna get the new LED set up.

It appears that Harley finally got the message on the lousy Tour-Pak light - I saw a yellow at a local dealership Sunday, and it came with the new LED light.  Now H-D needs to retrofit the new light for all of us poor suckers who got stuck with the defective one.
