To make that piece really sweet, bore it with an internal shoulder to hold a coil spring to apply some pressure to keep everything under just a bit of tension. Make it billet and then chrome it. A few grooves and beveled ends wouldn't hurt either.

It is all doable. The spring idea is a good one. I'd be curious if it will place undue wear elsewhere.

I don't care for chroming over aluminum of any grade. I feel it just doesn't hold up over time. For such a small part steel would work just fine.

I still haven't looked at mine. I picked up a new 08 Ford Super Duty and I've been busy getting it ready for work duty. I didn't realize how much stuff I had in the last truck to make it work ready.

How does the 08 SD run?

You don't want to see what I have on mine right now! I cut a piece of 1/2 copper pipe to length and sprayed it black still have the rubber on there too!   I have a friend that's going to turn a stainless piece to replace it when he has time. Probably still have an 1/8" piece of rubber on it to keep it tight.

Thanks for those links Bagger. But I'm still just trying to find a replacement for just the stock black bushing between the inner primary and shifter arm, not eliminate the rear shifter arm. I guess this is not such an easy one after all! I'm surprised at all you OCD maniacs! :o Hoist! 8)

FOUND THEM!
Smooth chrome with a wave washer to keep it from rattling. There are two versions, one as a OEM replacement (what Hoist was looking for) and one that is longer to replace one of the shifter arms.

I checked stock and they only had one so I ordered it. After looking at it if it seems like a decent piece I'll order a dozen or so of them. ;D

Shifter Anti-Rattle Kits For Big Twin

Stop that annoying shifter rattle with this custom spacer and shim kits.  Manufactured in the USA, these kits replace the dull finish stock spacer with a chrome plated spacer and wave washer.  In addition, these kits reduce pre-mature wear of the shifter linkage, stabilize the transmission shift arm, and also reduce fatigue on the internal shifter spring located in the transmission.  Installation instructions included.  Fits FLT models and Softail models as listed below.

Part No. 44400   $17.95
Fits all FLT Models 1984 and later with Heel & Toe Shifter.

Part No. 44401  $18.95
Fits FLT models 1984 and later
with toe Shifter only when Heel Shifter has been removed.

Thanks nidan, I already have that part, since I'm thinking of removing the heel shifter instead of buying a longer one. The stock one is too short, and takes too much rear floorboard space away.

The spacer I'm looking for is on the inside of that, between the inner primary and the shift levers. I can't believe most everyone has chrome inner primarys, and no one has changed this spacer. d00d, Terry, you guys gotta know something about this. ::)

Howie I know which piece you are talking about, it comes with a spring washer. I had one on my 2000 Road king.

One thing if you do this is to keep an eye on that lever as mine worked it's way off while traveling in heavy freeway traffic and pulling a trailer I looked down why I don't know but there it was laying in front of my toe so I stepped on it and headed for the curb. Boy was I lucky so this time I put the little chrome cap on instead.

The second two listed are from Drag Specialties, they are nice. The Badass is for both shifters and the second picture is for a single shifter.

The first two listed are from Stevenson's cycle.

The second two listed are better looking however they lack the wave washer (minimal).

The first two listed are plain looking in comparison. ;)

Kuryakyn has a couple for single and dual shifters also. They have a Delrin washer/sleeve to help the rattling. It is a pretty nice piece for $30.
