O6 SE Ultra Speaker Problem
« on: July 18, 2007, 09:49:06 AM »

Recently i started having issues with my speakers just going silent, then i toggle the switch and they will start working again.  Wondering if anyone has had the same problem?  Dealer is going to change out switch but I'm not sure if that is really the problem.

O6 SE Ultra Speaker Problem
« Reply #1 on: March 15, 2012, 08:57:35 PM »

PaceSE....What corrected your problem?  My 06 SE Ultra just started do the same thing yesterday.  Just before they go out I hear a pop.  Shut the radio off and sometimes they come back on.  This morning before I fired it up I turned the radio on. It came on but no sound. I heard a very faint noice coming from the area above and behind the speaker switch.  When I turned the radio off the noise stopped. Going to pull the fairing this weekend.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes my 08 Ultra is doing the same.  I am going to pull the fairing tomorrow and check for lose wires.  If I don"t find anything I will order another speaker switch and see if that fixes the problem.  The other thing to do is pull the radio and send it to Iron Cross Audio for repair and upgrades.  My speakers also pop and then I hear static from the back speakers only.  I have got the speakers to work again by shutting off the speaker switch and then turning it back on.  I will be interested if anybody finds out what is wrong and what repairs the problem.

I don't have an Ultra, but I did add a similar speaker switch to my SESG2. Doesn't the CVO Ultra come with a speaker/cruise control switch?
Any issues with intermittent cruise operation?

My switch is the "Street Glide" version; bad-azz and bare-bones - hahahaha. :)
And cheap ... never forget cheap! :2thumbsup: (I think a "standard" speaker toggle switch is ~$30?)

Anyway...
In general, if toggling a switch causes the problem to go away, then the switch is causing the issue. I would suspect a dirty contact within the switch. If you're a DIY guy then I would suggest pulling the speaker switch, spraying it with contact cleaner, then blowing the residual contact cleaner out with "mild-compressed" air. Don't get crazy with it - 50-60lbs should be enough - just enough to "blow-out" any dirt and residual contact cleaner. Let the switch dry fully then re-install.

Any more info on history of the bikes? Stored indoors, stored outdoors? Mileage? Humid/Desert environment?

Just offering a possible solution to replacing a ~$100 switch.
Might be something worth considering.

Hope this helps ... be interested in final fix action.

TIF2, I will take the switch out tomorrow and try the spray cleaner and see if it helps, it can't hurt anything and like you say it might be the problem.  My 08 has 48,000 miles, stored indoors, and the weather is southern Illinois, US Route 50 about 33 miles west of Vincennes, IN.  Thanks for the tip.

Great info!

Any issue with cruise being intermittent?
Yours is the "dual function" switch ... yah?

I grew up in Champagn ... jeez Illinois certainly is a harsh environment!
Let us know if it pans out.

Cruise switch is a separate switch and is working like it should.  I should add I have Hog Tunes amp and their upgraded speakers.

Most electrical component spray cleaners are non conductive and evaporate quickly...at least the one's I've used to clean large starter panels for big electrical motors.  I think we used to use CRC products for that application.

When you toggle the speaker switch, an icon on the radio faceplate will change from a speaker to a headset to nothing. If the icon is changing, your switch is fine and you have an internal switching circuit defect.

Thanks Iron Cross, one thing I did notice a couple times was on the right third of the display I had a "R" show up, have not notice it since.  I took the outer fairing off looked for any wires that might be rubbing a metal bracket or a connection that could be lose but did not see any, sometimes when I turned on the bike with the radio on the speakers would play and sometimes they would not, any ideas?

Sounds like either vibration damage to the main board or the DSP switching circuit is going bad.

Any time you take an 06 or later bike in to a shop for radio or even a service have them up date your radio to the latest version 8.25. it won't fix the problem on this thread but it is often over looked. to check your version hold any two of the station preset buttons turn on the radio, hold the buttons until the screen comes up then push the upper right button and it will display what version you have. update only takes about five minutes. I'll bet most radio's have never been updated. latest version has been out since feb. 2011.     axil

Sounds like Iron Cross will be getting more business.

Try the headset, if it works fine, you have finally reached the point of vibration damage they mentioned.  Seems like a ton of posts over the years on this subject.

Good luck.

Looked into my speaker problem today. Removed fairing. Didn't find anything other than a cracked right side horizontal fairing bracket.  Pulled fairing cap and switch. The switch looks like it's sealed fairly good. Pg A13 of the manual shows all 4 switches going to a fairing harness (105B) and in between it and the speaker switch is another connector 105C/D.  My bike doesn't have that connector. Plugged the headset in for the first time.  I'm getting good sound out of it. I'm getting the appropriate icons on the radio when cycling the switch. So I don't think the switch is the problem. Radio sounds much better with headset.  I may rig me a setup where I can plug my Bose ear buds into the console and press on.

BTW...anyone know what the circled connectors are for? The come off the headlight harness.

As it turned out it wasn't the speakers or the switch, it was the radio.  I changed out 3 radios through the Harley exchange program and they lasted any where from 6 months to a year and crap out again.  Heard about www.ironcrossaudio.com/ so I called and talked to one of the techs and described to him the problem that I was having.  First he said to check the faring mounts and sure enough I had several that were broken( fixed them), I then sent my radio to them(very quick turn around), they upgraded the circuit board and I purchased and extended warranty on my unit for what it would cost me to use Harley exchange.  I have had my radio in service for over three years now with zero problems.  I would highly recommend ironcrossaudio.
