Flags to J&M Shorties
« on: July 20, 2007, 11:07:00 AM »

I am contemplating putting HD Flags (like the Tourpack flags) on my J&M Shorty antennas.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Any objection about this?

Will the antennas still work properly?

Thank you for your comments.

I don't think this is a good idea. The antennas aren't designed for the stress the flags will put on them.

Agreed.  They are fiberglass and at highway speeds especially not a good idea.

This is the flag pole I use - it folds down and is VERY durable.

They are at many motorcycle rallies - found these to be better than the ones Kury or HD  offers.

ISKI,
Does this have a push button release for the fold down action?  It is difficult to tell from the Web Site.  The other link to another company points out theirs is a push button action (little more $$'s and includes a flag that I don't need).

Agree with the comments that not a good idea to strap a flag to the antennae and take her up to highway speed.  They are not made for that.

Also wanted to make a comment on the M-J flag poles.  I ran them for a few years and finally gave up.  Poles are great but the chrome finish would peel off of them way too early or at least before I thought it should.  I finally got tired of replacing them and gave up.  You might want to check with them about a warranty on their finish.  I never fooled with it and just gave up but who knows maybe they have a warranty or something.

It has a push button to fold down - works ok - needs WD-40/penetrating oil about once a month.

So far the chrome on the one I have is ok - purchased new in April - recommended by a friend who had had several Kury ones break.

The flag appears to be very durable with a weatherproof finish.

Road_Glider,
Which one did you end up with after M-J's? :-\
Just replaced it with the same product from them.  After the chrome finish flaking off on the second set I just gave up.  It did look good for a little over a year but to me they should look good alot longer than that.

Well I guess for the higher price this company affords you lifetime warranty.  The shaft is Stainless but not sure about the base.

Received my order on 8-10.  All polished Stainless Steel.  Looks good and good fitment.  Little higher cost but wont have to worry about chrome chipping off like on other version made out of aluminum.

Thanks for the link to that other site.  If I get another set will give theirs a try.  Stainless is probably the way to go instead of the chromed aluminum ones.

Yup, that's the one I use - all stainless.  :2vrolijk_21:

Phil, I bought my flag mount from propad.com...it's the fold down version. They have a new model specific for the SEUC (5/8 in.).  I just received it last week but it looks good and works great to.....fold it down then put your cover on the bike.

Got a somewhat related question I thought I'd throw in here.  Has anyone found a source for flags that will withstand highway use without having the seams self destruct?  I use the H-D flag and mount on my Tour-Pak, and I prefer to leave it on all the time.  (Yes, I know they say for parade use only.  I tend to ride in one man parades at normal highway speeds.)

I've tried having momma do some additional sewing on the seam prior to installing the flag, and while that delays the demise of the flag for a while it still leaves a lot to be desired.  Any ideas???

Jerry, don't know if this would work but a good quality marine flag has been on my boat for 18 months and is still perfect. I know that is not being used at hwy speeds but it is in the salt, wind and sun all day everyday. During that same time period, I have replaced my University Of Alabama flag (which is not marine grade) 5 or 6 times. Might be worth a try. :nixweiss:

Good idea, I'll stop by one of the local marinas and see what's available.  Thanks.
