Howie...sorry to hear about your problem.  One thing to keep in the back of your head, if need be, is that I can get some references/recommendations for you if you do the surgery route (if that's even and option, which I doubt) because of where I work.  Dept of Medicine at UAB.  UAB has been on the leading edge of Heart Surgery/Transplant/etc since day one.  We have some of THE best heart people at UAB, bar none.  One of the divisions under the dept of med is Cardiology, and then the Dept of Surgery has the surgical side of the treatments.  Point is that I'll do what I can here to at least find out about people for you...they all know each other.

On the other side of things, I personally would not hesitate in taking the meds, getting things regulated, and continuing my life as before, exercising appropriate caution, of course, and not taking unnecessary risks (wear your f'ing helmet).  I've been on cholesterol meds for over 15 years...it works for me and it's just an automatic thing I do right before bedtime.  No where near the same thing as what you're having to take, but these meds do work.  Surgery should always be the last resort, IMO, when other options have been exhausted.

Thanks so much for that Terry! I'll find out more details and get all my options laid out on Tues. If surgery is an option, I would probably go that route, only if I can be assured that I wouldn't need any more meds after recovery. Otherwise, there's no reason to consider it. But if it is, I'm going to start looking into the best engine builder (cardiothoracic surgoen) I can find. I'll definitely contact you when I know more, and if surgery is an option. I really appreciate your willingness to help me find that great engine builder Ill need for this rebuild! ;) Hoist! 8)

The engine builder might be to your benefit.  Everyone else's, however, will be seeing your your ass on the dyno for the final tuning when it's all over and done with  :bananarock: !

Howie, so sorry that you and Binx are going through this.  I agree with Terry ... check out UAB...it's the BEST.   :2vrolijk_21:  I've known several folks who have had open heart surgery and did really well.  A second opinion is always good.

Behave yourself and do what Nurse Binx says to do.   :)

Howie,

It's really tough to give advice on something like this.  All I can offer is to approach it the same way you did with your engine; find a mechanic (cardiologist) that you can trust completely and who will spend the time to go through all the options with you.  Whatever you eventually decide, be assured we will all be pulling for you.

Jerry

Ditto here Howie !  How about Physical fittness. :nixweiss: Is that an option, and giving up bad habits such as drinking, smoking, junk food, proper diet. Be positive, and live your life to the fullest, be happy ride often.  ;D

Thanks Dave! Man, that's a little contradictory! ;D The smoking's gotta end! The drinking is only very occasional-very, the rest I do anyway! Like I said, I feel great! It's alternatives, and beating this thing that I'm pursuing. And the last one-that's a given!!! ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie,
As has been said, get a good Internal Medicine (Cardio specialist) and do your homework. My brother had it (cardiomypathy) , he didn't get it taken care of and he only made it to 49. Lots of types, causes and treatments for this and here's a link to Mayo Clinic, which has some good info: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cardiomyopathy/DS00519

Thanks a lot Joe. All I can do is take these pills for now. They seem to be breaking up the clot and the blood flows better around the black spot. I'm sorry to hear about your brother, and I do know how serious this can be. That's why I'd like to get rid of it. Even if it's a little aggressive. If not, then I guess I'll be a pill popper the rest of my life! ;) Hoist! 8)

Howie,
First of all, Sorry that you have to go through all of this.  Secondly, I have been more of a lurker than active participant, but feel somehow spiritually in tune with you!  I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you personally, but sure do look forward to that opportunity!  There has been a lot of really good advice given through this forum and even if it wasn't what you were looking for, it's there anyway.  Fortunately, today you at least have a backup with the meds if there are no other options.  If other genuine options exist following your extensive research, (which I know you will thouroughly exhaust) take the necessary time and make educated decisions with Binx!  It sure looks like you are on the right track so far, stick with it.  Ride or not?  You made that decision a long time ago!  Our thoughts remain with you!
