Hmmm.......................Nuthin embedded here! Is there a hidden meaning to this Jerry? :confused5: ;D ;)

Hoist! 8)

Somehow managed to hit the post button before I typed anything.  My mind is shot, and we're only two days into the new year.  Gettin' old and senile sure sucks.

What I was going to say was, yes, Coumadin can make bruises much worse and more painful.  I have a brother-in-law who was put on Coumadin for heart failure recently, and I was there when the nurse and doctor went through all the precautions and risks.  He has since found that just lightly bumping against a piece of furniture can create a big bruise.  As long as you're on this stuff, you need to be careful.  I know that doesn't fit your style, but the alternative can be very serious.

That's what I suspected Jerry. Thanks for the info. That's why she told me to stop riding. Then I told her I'd stop taking that Coumadin crap first! She said "Be careful then"! ;)

Fairly new to this board and just browsing today when I ran across this thread.  Read the first page and last two, so don't know what all has been said, but can give you my perspective based on my health issues.  Without going into details, I have an undefined autoimmune disease and some other maladies which started a few years ago.  I'm now 58, always been very active, good weight, and quite healthy.  I am now on several meds, including coumadin and prednisone.....and I have moderately severe osteoporosis,a femur rod and a Vena Cava filter to boot.  But all that is not really the crux of your questions and searching for an answer.
If I dont' take the coumadin then I will clot and likely die.  If I don't take the daily prednisone, I can not get up or move around (nor get on our bike and ride!!! and my wife loves to be on the back of your bike!!  Lucky me!!)  Prednisone as you may know really promotes worse osteoporosis along with many other side effects.....long term.  Now if I choose, I can think about how much this all effects my life, but I don't.  I have so many days left on earth, so many days left that I am healthy enough to fish, hunt some, boat, RIDE MY HARLEY, be with my wife and grown boys, etc..  Do I want to waste one of those days that are a gift.....NOPE!  So, after I learned that there are no cures and there are even less answers to my disease, I chose to live each day fully and thankfully.  If I ever have a day where I want to question it all, I simply think about others, children and adults who have died from their diseases, can't walk, can't see, etc...  I am blessed and I will use everything I have and enjoy it.
So, if and when you do everything you can to learn about your condition and treatments......move forward with the things you love and never look back or let yourself feel blue for more than a few moments.  Worry is for someone who thinks they have time to waste...I surely don't....how about you?
Good luck with your future.

What a wonderful way of looking at it, and attitude means so much in how you approach obstacles. Like you I'm thankful for everyday I wake up alive, through all the aches and pains that we endure as we get older bottom line we are here to be with family and friends. Any day above ground is way better then each day our bodies will be below ground.

Good luck in your continued success dealing with your ailments. :2vrolijk_21:

Sorry to hear of your illnes and really appreciate your insight 212hjet! I've come to the same conclusion about there being no repair for this, just treatment. So with the meds I stay, and don't worry much about ramifications. I can't change who I am, nor do I want to. I'd be negligent not to explore ANY and ALL options. But since I have now, I'm just poppin the ole pills daily now. I admire your attitude toward the illness and feel the same way. Just still getting used to it I guess! ;)

Welcome aboard this Great Site and enjoy yourself here 212hjet! :2vrolijk_21:

Howie,

It's really tough to give advice on something like this.  All I can offer is to approach it the same way you did with your engine; find a mechanic (cardiologist) that you can trust completely and who will spend the time to go through all the options with you.  Whatever you eventually decide, be assured we will all be pulling for you.

Jerry

:stupid:

I agree with Jerry. This is good advice.

Coumadin can make bruises much worse and more painful.

Hoist,

Jerry is exactly right.

Coumadin and Jantoven are trademarked names for the drug warfarin which is a blood thinner ("anti-coagulant"). It's designed to keep your blood from clotting which means you will bleed more easily both internally and externally. So, you need to be very careful with bumps and bruises as well as cuts and scrapes.

You can find more information on Coumadin at Drugs.com.

Hoist, one thing I do and  would suggest you consider is wearing a med alert braclet or something similar that identifies your use of warfarin.  I never think about the outcome of a spill or other accident at home, hunting , fishing boating, etc., because I've already contemplated all that and made my decisions about how I want to live.  However, if something does happen then at least the folks around me will know quickly that I have an anti-coagulent problem and address it as best they can.  I also have let my riding buddies and those I do things with regularly know of my use of warfarin.  If that can help me to survive, great.  All Emergency folks are supposed to be trained to look for these ID's promptly and wife who works in an emergency room indicates that such is pretty true.  I weaar a web one with the metal tag riveted on because I am not a jewlery type guy but they have every style for personal preference.  Just google it if you are interested.   Just a thought.
Thanks for the welcomes.  I have found this board to be very helpful and I appreciate all of it.
