Loading FLHTCUSE into F-150 Super Cab
« on: August 08, 2007, 01:27:25 AM »

I want to put my 2006 Screamin' Eagle Ultra Classic in my 2000 F-150 Super Cab and drive from Omaha to Florida.  Any "do's or don'ts" I should know about?

Welcome to the site!

Please don't ask me how I know this information but...  the front fender is 1/2" lower than the inside rail of the truck bed. If you pull straight in and assume that the front wheel will hit the bed before the fender does you will be grossly wrong  :(. Likewise if you use the front brake when loading, the nose will dive just enough to hit. I have used a Condor stand and it works well.

Happy miles & smiles,

AJ

Never have been much of a Ford man, but the Chevys for a while had a problem with the cables breaking that hold the tailgate. Would hate for that to happen with a bike in the back. Maybe lay down a 2x12x8 to distribute the weight and it might raise the bike enough to not hit the top of the bed on the fender.

I prefer the non ratcheting myself...simpler and actually less likely to slip.

And the cables on my '97 Dodge broke at some point...might have been 2003 or 2004.

Found that post!

What AJ said and in addition if the bike rolls forward in a stop it will bend the front of the bed.   I would recommend a chock for the front of the bike.   I also have an F250 long bed and I still have the dent there and had to replace the fender as well.

If the back wheel sits out side the bed and any part of the tailgate it will dent it!  It doesn't matter if it's a Superduty or F150, I have both.  You need to put a board under the back wheel that distributes the weight onto the bed of the truck and not the tailgate alone.  However, strapping the back down helps but I have always used only two straps.

If you put a board up front by the bed wall it prevent bowing in that location as well.  Also, if the front fender hits the top, put a board under the front tire to elevate it a bit.

Thanks for all the information!  I contacted my dealer in Omaha and the dealer in Miami.  Both said they would help me load and unload . . . we’re family, right?  However, after reading all the posts, my wife and I decided to fly and ride.

My F-150 has nearly 120,000 on her and doesn’t need the additional miles.  We figured it is about 3,200 miles round trip.  I get approximately 15 MPG and estimated around $3.00 per gallon.  Two nights down and two nights back plus meals . . . it is less expensive to fly and ride.

At age 60, my days of drive all day and all night have long past . . . ergo, I ride an FLHTCUSE!

Again, thanks for all the tips.  If I decide to take a shorter haul, I can certainly use your advise, or get a new truck with a trailer.

You are just getting into your prime Biggy.  Enjoy the ride, I'm sure it will be great.  Take pictures and get them up when you get back home.

Screw it being in the bed.

Rent a Trailer from U-Haul and do it right!

You are absolutely 100 per cent correcto!  On our way back from Key West to Miami, we stopped for fuel.  Someone else did the exact thing you recommended . . . he rented a U-Haul and put his 2007 SE in the trailer.

We rode the rental down from Miami, and left it parked at the hotel for three days.  Next time, I’ll trailer my bike down from Omaha to Miami.
