I use amsoil in all three holes.  I change the oil every 2500 miles and the transmission and primary every 5000.  I have considered changing the engine oil every 5000 but it is a small price to pay.  I end up changing my motor oil three times a year verses 2 times a year if I went to 5000 mile intervals.  I know its not needed but more has to be better than less.  I do get hung up in traffic occasionally and even with the fuel injection dialed in the air cooled 103's still run hot.  I guess it's piece of mind.  I have considered changing to red line in the trans but it's just easier adding the same oil to all three holes.

That shockproof heavy has my tranny working fine. What else can I say. Try it. :2vrolijk_21:

The 20/50 will work in the tranny, but most prefer the heavier oil in the gearbox. I would use the redline shockproof or the Amsoil severe gear 75/140.

As far as the tranny goes, I use Redline Heavy Shockproof, it shifts much better, real smooth!

The oil thing is a different story, my take on it is synthetics work very well and I don't think you have a problem with viscosity, or the formation of acids like fossil oil, but dirt and grime, filtering is the problem. I use Mobil1, but change my oil every 5,000. You can get a slightly better filter, but unless you spend over $100 it's not much better than stock, so I just use a good filter and still change my oil regularly.

I read an interesting article on engine oil a few years ago, when I got into a discussion with some people about changing intervals for oil on a car. I can't recall all the details.  I had been changing oil on my vehicles every 3K since I was 16 years old, and had been using Castrol GTX since I owned my first VW, which was in 1969 (damn, I wish I had that Karmon Ghia now!!).  The article/test took several (don't remember the exact number of test vehicles) cabs in New York City, built identical engine for each of them, used the same premium dino oil (don't remember the brand), etc.  About as good as they could get with regards to controlling the variables in the test.  Changed some of the cabs' oil every 3K, some every 5K, some every 7.5K, and another group didn't get changed until something like 15K.  After several tens of thousand of miles on each vehicle, performing other required maintenance like air filters, "tune ups", etc., each engine was torn back down and measured for wear, signs of stress due to contaminants, etc.  The findings showed NO appreciable difference between the engines with 3K intervals, and those with 7.5K.  There was SOME wear on the 15K interval engines, but not dramatic.  At that point, I figured you don't get much harsher driving environment than NYC cabs endure, so I compromised and started doing mine every 5k on my cars, back when I was still using the Castrol GTX.  The Subaru regional rep told me that if I use Mobil 1 in my Outback, I was wasting product if I changed it before 7.5K.  He said most people still stick to the old standards because it makes them "feel" better, not because the engine needs it.  He said even 7.5K on synthetic was overdoing it, even with around town driving.

So, for me, it's not about the few dollars I save waiting to change until the motor has 5K (bike motor), but about not wasting the resource.  That may sound corny, tree-hugger, Al Gorish, blah, blah, but I think I need to do my share to not dump perfectly good product.

Here's a couple of sites on this subject, I had a good site that talked about it, but can't find it now.

When should you change to redline in the trans on a new bike.  08 seuc will be picked up next week!!!  I've always used amsoil syn. in my bikes engine and primary, but the redline is new to me.
p. s. never had a S.E. before either.

ASAP. Those fluids are better then what the MoCo provides. Only problem you may have if you're not doing it yourself is getting your dealer (or whoever is servicing your scooter) to put them in. Some dealers will only use Syn 3. If you want you can run Amsoil in all 3 holes.

Okay, that does it...   I'm officially with TC.  Long oil changes are the name of the day now...

BTW,  well said TC, and very compelling for a number of good reasons...

Just to add my 2 cents:  I have an '02 RK with a 103 making 120 hp at the rear wheel.  I've run Amsoil since new and I beat the snot out of it every chance I get.  I use their V-Twin 20/50 AND an Amsoil oil filter, I change my oil every fall.  That means about 5-7K for me.  I've had this engine torn down many times for bigger upgrades and have never seen any signs of excessive wear on anything in there.  Oil change is cheaper than a new engine but you guys are wasting your money if you change it every 2500 miles.  Just my opinion.  Oh yeah-and I too run it in everything I own and my daily driver get changed every 25,000 as well.
