Eyeball Shaking Vibrations
« on: August 13, 2007, 10:24:35 PM »

Has anyone else experienced eyeball shaking vibrations with their windshields on ? I have a 17" clearshield with grey tint , recurved at the top. Great product BUT, I would like to find one that I could actually focus enough to read the signs down the highway. I like to ride without one but the wifey will not ride unless it is on. :nixweiss:

Yep, that's the exact term I used to describe what I get from both the stock ornament and the 17" recurve Clearview that I tried as a replacement.  That one didn't make it far on the way to Sturgis before I turned around and left it in the garage.  Forty mph or ninety, there wasn't a smooth spot to be found.  I've heard those goofy-looking chrome boat anchor things that mount along side the forks help, but there's an aesthetic limit to what I am willing to do.

I wonder what's causing this vibration. And you say the wind deflectors mounted on the side of the forks help elimate this effect?

So I've read from a couple people that have them.  Evidently some of the problem is from air coming up between the tank and windshield.  If I stick my head down there (literally chin on the trees) I don't feel it, but do when I'm upright so I don't think that's where it's from.  I had a king-size detachable on my Fat Boy that did the same thing - cutting it down and drilling vent holes through it didn't help (nothing to lose at that point, it was useless anyway).

they help allot....but i couldn't stand the looks. the addition of passing lamps and relocated turn signals help somewhat. it's a roadking
so enjoy it. :2vrolijk_21:

I have installed the wind deflectors and they do indeed resolve this issue

I started wearing goggles and the blurred vision caused by the glasses being buffeted around is completely eliminated.

I'm a little confused here. Sure seems like a lotta people are getting this. I've had a whole buncha RK's and never felt what's being described here. Maybe I'm just so conditioned after all these years, I just don't notice. But I feel very comfortable on the RK and never feel bothered by anything like this. And I would notice if I'm uncomfortable. You shouldn't feel these things on a RK. Something's not set up for you on your bike. Find it and correct it. You should feel like you're on a Rolling Barcolounger! :nixweiss:

I've got the same wind problem. Just can't get up the nerve to put the wind deflectors on. Don't like the looks of them. I'm sure the passing lamps and relocated turn signals would help.

Maybe that's it. I've never run a RK without those. Interesting. Do all of you that have this problem not have the passing lamp/TS? If so, who's the first to try adding it to see if it stops? Mine were on when I picked up the bike, and all standard RK's have them stock. Good call Kodiak! ;)

Some buffeting here, but none to complain about. Don't like the looks of the deflectors that's for sure.

Rode yesterday without the 17" windshield and I didn't have this problem at all, so it's got to be the wind turbulence around the shield. I was planning on going with the road lamps for the screaming eagle bikes ( not the one with the bar connecting the two lamps ) so I guess now I'll be putting them on sooner than was planned. Let you know the results, you may all want to do this change to eliminate this eyeball shaking experience.

My chrome boat anchors eliminated all turbulence!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if your eyes are shaking you ain't beholden much.

I fall into that category.  I’ll standby and let someone else determine if that is the cause, if it is I’ll be sure to add them soon after.
