hey guys. after tearing the heads back off henrys bike, it was a valve spring issue. parts will fly in and problem will be handled. i take pride in the fact that when i install the fuel tank, trn the switch and fire the engine, the only thing left to do is tune for breakin. unfotunately, there was a problem----------consider it corrected and i will personally deliver the bike to henry even if i gotta walk home.

when integrity is in check, my heart bleeds.

Thanks Red.  We'll get through this.  Everything is going to be OK.  And you're a friggin' nut if you think I'm gonna let your coonass walk back to the Wiregrass..........without beer and crawfish.   ;D ;D ;D  Just kiddin', Bro.  Rest easy the rest of the weekend.

Glad to hear the problem is diagnosed and will be solved in time for you to take the Melon to MV.  Looking forward to hearing this beast run!!

Dennis

Never was any integrity issue.
We are big boys, we know chit happens.
Now that we are all feeling better now I have to ask.
How funny would it have been to see Henry on Parker's pink harley?

Too bad there was a problem Dennis.  Both for your and for Henry's sake.  What was the valve spring "issue" that was causing it to bend pushrods?

When it comes to PD, pushrod dysfunction, the options are somewhat limited; I’m thinking a little good old fashioned coil bind.

We all certainly hope so for both Henry's and the shop's sake.  Certainly the easiest solution.  Only other likely option takes a lot more parts to fix.

dj, it was a form of coil bind, didnt show in the head fixture.

twolane, no, wasnt that!! bike ran smooth, would ust get intermittant ticking, the pushrod barely bent and would rotate till it rubbed pushrod tube, causing the noise.

only real damage was having to call henry and tell him the bike wasnt right! was rushing too finish up so he could have it saturday, all went well and was ready to shove the sniffer up a pipe and check/correct initial map when tickety tickety tick. i knew what had to be done, and i hated to do it, was a hard call to make.

grabbed the phone and tried to catch henry before he left home, but he was in route. i could see the mushroom cloud from the shop!!

henry is a great guy. when i got home yesterday, i called to tell him of findings and corrective actions and he totally understood, wanting to compensate in some form for delivery of his bike! aint no way !! i appreciate the understanding and offer to let me crash and eat at his house, also. HENRY, youre the real deal!  you can expect a detailed bike in your garage soon!

Dennis,

What was your corrective action?  Why did the pushrod bend?

Of all the potential bad news options that's actually one of the better ones for bent parts in a valve train.  Pain in the ass of course to have to deal with it.  Even worse just for the sake of how bad you and Henry both feel about it.  But changing a set of springs is better than some of the alternatives.  Whose option was this particular set of springs?

Just had a thought.  Does the frame allow room to change springs with the heads still on the jugs?  That's something I've never had a reason to have to try on Harley and never even thought of until this moment.  Is there room on a Harley to pressurize a cylinder so you don't drop a valve and take the spring pack apart?

maybe on front, but i think it necceassary to pull both heads to confirm problem anyway, cant fix a problem based on speculation.

Dennis tells me parts are due in tomorrow AM.  I imagine he'll do like he always does and work until he drops or his neckbone gives out.  I'm thinking he'll be riding Wednesday, Thursday at the latest.

Wasn't suggesting that in this case you'd want to.  Had just realized I didn't even know if a guy could :nixweiss: .

sorry man, didnt mean to come off like it sounded. you probably could if you had a spring compressor that would work. but the rocker boxes would have to be removed to see bottom of springs. if you go that far, its just exhaust, intake bolts, then head bolts and you can put heads in fixture.

i know what you are saying, i used to connect compressor to hose in spark plug hole and use special valve spring compressor on my mustang after trashing springs. was a piece of cake.
