Kickstand Spring, Toy Hauler - Oops
« on: August 20, 2007, 11:21:33 AM »

Hello all:

A couple questions here...I purchased a new Toy Hauler and took the CUSE up to the mountains this past w/e and did some riding and camping.  When loading the bike the frame seems to hit the top of the ramp/trailer and caused the kickstand spring to come off .  Anyone know where this reattaches to the bike?  Also, any trick to reattach it?  Lastly, given that this will be a continued problem, any ideas on how to soften the angle so as not to continue to bottom out?

Thanks

What brand of toy hauler did you buy?  Make sure that the tie down brackets are secured into metal framing and not just the plywood.

As far as reducing the angle, you may try to jack up the front of the toy hauler as high as you can to reduce the angle of the ramp.

The kick stand spring attaches to a hole in the frame and there is a bracket on the kick stand itself.  I lost a spring on my Alaska trip and it took two of us to get it back on!!!!

Tom,

I also have a toy hauler.  I have not had problems with the kickstand spring, but I have hit high-center before when loading the bike.

When possible, I try to park so that the rear to the trailer is closer to the ground, thus reducing the angle of the ramp (like backing up to a slope).

You could also try raising your jacks on the front of your trailer when you are ready to load the bike.  Raising the front of the trailer lowers the rear of the trailer and reduces the angle of the ramp.

I usually carry a few 2" and 4" blocks of wood.  I have used these to block up under the end of the ramp to reduce the angle of the ramp also.

I don't know what you use to secure your bike while hauling it in the toyhauler, but you might want to check out this link:  http://wheeldock.com/default_wheeldock.asp
I have used a few different methods and have found the wheeldock to be superior.

I have "caught" my bike on the ramp door frame if the rear of the trailer is too high.  I  have a couple of options, raise up the jacks on the front to lower the rear or put some leveling block (2x4's, etc.) under the edge of the door to raise it up some and make the angle of attack to the trailer less severe.  I have a "transistion" piece attached to the end of my ramp door with gives me a little play to raise the main door up but still gives me a flat approach to the ramp door.  It works well.   Here's the wheel chock I use.  It's removable, so it gives me a flat floor to use my garage for other uses on the 5th wheel if I'm not carrying the bike.  http://www.motorcyclejacks.com/chock.shtml  This wheel chock works great and it comes in chrome.  ;)

OK OK OK

I'm sorry :'(

It just sounded like the spring came off and you had the dealer hook it back up!

AND, you will be on time, if you plan on riding bitch with Nancy.

If your not on time you will be standing there wondering where she is and she will be 50 miles up the road!

The trick is to set the bike up right on a stand to take the weight off the stand then take the top nut off with the locking plate then you can move the stand forward towards the front of the bike.  This will allow you to hook up the spring then all you have to do is to pull the stand back into place and reattach the locking plate and the nut.

What for brand of Toy Haulers do you guys have?

I went to the RV show in Hershey yesterday and looked at each and every brand of Toy Hauler there. Finding a Toy Hauler to suit "My" needs is tough as it will be big. I have it down to two companies, Weekend Warrior and Keystone Raptor. The Weekend Warrior is perfect size wise. The largest Keystone Raptor is a little small but I should be able to make due with it. The Keystone Raptor has a nicer interior than the Weekend Warrior. Pricing is similar when the same features are figured in. Now this doesn't mean I've ruled out the other companies. I've only looked at about twenty brands so far. I HAVE to have a minimum of 16' of true unobstructed cargo space. Most of the floor plans I have looked at will show 16' along side of the stove. I guess they figure you'll just lean the bike against the stove! Oh, what is making this difficult is I want a tag trailer not a fifth wheel.

1) If you put traction tape on the ramp, the tire will stick good.
2)  Lots of throttle, drop clutch.
3)  Bikes on one wheel don't high center.

Problem solved!   :P

I have a KZ Sportster http://www.kz-rv.com/nv_sportster/index.html  Not sure if they make a trailer with 16ft of cargo area....that may be a little hard to find.  I have the 37ft model.  They also make a 41ft.  These are a little more pricey that the Raptor & Weekend Warrior, but worth it.  Well built and plush.

The largest Raptor, 3814SS, comes with a 14' garage. Why do you need 16'?  I don't know if any toy hauler that comes with a 16 ft garage without it being part of the living area when you're hauling the bike.  You sure the 14ft garage wouldn't be big enough for you?   I have a Raptor 3600RL.  It has a single 12ft garage on the left rear portion of the trailer and then a sofabed, flat screen TV, refrigerator, and wet bar slideout on the right back 12 ft of the trailer.  We only have the one bike, so a single bike garage works great for us, plus we get 36ft of living space to boot.
