Compression Release - Here we go again!
« on: August 21, 2007, 10:41:00 PM »

Two months ago, on June 19th, the dealer replaced the rear compression release.  It failed because the wires to it get melted and short out on the head bolt that they pass over to connect to the wire loom by the throttle body.  The last time he repaired it, he added some additional insulation to try to protect the wires, guess it didn't work!  The only way you can check these things is with a compression check, which I did tonight.  I got 150# front & 210# rear, indicating another failure.  So, I guess I'll have to return the bike to Harley every two months for the next seven years (I have the extended warranty); FUN- FUN!

So sorry to hear of your problems. Why can't HD build something right. Oh yea I forgot it is all about profit, using lesser quality parts etc.. But what do I know I am just a woman???

It would be nice if they could get the head gasket and the compression releases to fail at the same time so you only had to make one trip to the dealer every 5000 miles.  Just combine it all into the 5k, 10k, etc. service intervals.  >:(

Sorry about the problems you're having stekat.  Hopefully they will get serious about fixing these designed-in defects before your seven years is up.  It's a damn shame the customers have to pay extra for a service contract just to take care of the MoCo's screw-ups.

I realize this is a very old topic, but do need an update if you don't mind.

Did your compression release problem (burnt wiring) go away?  Or are you still having to get MOCO to replace the wiring every 2 months.

I'm thinking about adding automatic compression releases to my '99. But not if they're a pain in the bu*tt.

Thanks for any input.

Yeah, my problem went away WHEN I REMOVED THEM AND ALL THE WIRING FOR THEM! ::)

If you're adding them, just put manuals in. Pushing 2 buttons is no biggie. Why complicate it further when you don't have to! ;)

And BTW, welcome aboard to this great sire Jim! :2vrolijk_21:

Go with the manuals as Hoist suggests.  I doubt that you can even retro the ACR's because they're controlled by the ECM which your '99 won't support.

I did solve the burnt wiring on my ACR's by using a high temp insulating sleeve that I got at the local speed shop.  The wires are routed over the head bolt which melted them.

You can tie automatic CRs into the starter circuit like S&S does, inlieu of the ECM. But like I said, why over complicate things. Just use the manual ones, and get in the habit of using them. ;)

I was searching for this as my is hard starting and wondering if I too have issues with wiring.  Great idea to test the cylinders.  I am going to re-wire if I need too like S&S to the starter circuit.  Mine makes terrible noise when starting and I too have had the ECU re-flashed to something and wonder is they disabled the release.     I am the second owner and don't have a clue to what they have done at the HD dealer.

You pay good money for these bikes and to see the crap engineering is just overwhelming.  Simple wiring changes, and better engineering could make a happier customer~~~!!!  :soapbox:

Thank all~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :orange:

CookieCVO, you could also have a bad compensator.  Do a search as some here have had that problem

It's random and only upon start.  Most the noise is at the starter / ring gear mesh.  It really pops some times too.  If it's the compensator, you would think when you romp on it, it would make a noise or you would feel something.  If the compensator is springing up and caming past that is not GOOD~~~~

I will search for the compensator topic....

Thanks~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :2vrolijk_21:
