Isolated drive system
« on: August 22, 2007, 04:11:18 PM »

I have an 07 SEUC, 27k miles, have always had a vibration in 5th gear when under 3000 rpms and at any speed in 6th gear. I really like the bike and have been comfortable on it by simply riding around those problem areas. I have had several "experts" ride it and they all agreed that the vibration was there but did not really know how to cure it. I always felt that it is geared too high and needed a smaller front sprocket or a larger rear one.

This last weekend , I purchased the IDS kit and installed it myself and that eliminated the vibration, the bike is now as smooth as my 05 seeg. The installation was pretty straight forward, if you don't have a press, however, you need to have the dealer press in the bearing before you take it home. I still feel that the gearing should be a little lower and I may install a 31 or 30 tooth front sprocket, just to give it more pep.

I have read about some owners having a vibration at 2900 rpms in any gear, which is more of an engine problem. It will be interesting to see if the IDS will help that type of problem.

VTROD,

Interesting...I have had my new 08 SEUC for a couple of weeks now and I was just thinking the other day about changing the front sprocket.  Might be nicer to have a little lower first gear - and maybe raise the rpms a little when cruising at 70 mph.  I will also be pulling a small trailer, so the lower gearing might help there too.

So how much was the kit?

Vtrod, I posted on this subject about a week ago and found the same benefits that you did.  The launch off the line was much easier, the power pulses were virtually gone especially around 2k where they are the worst.  My fifth gear whine is also gone.  I find that I can use sixth gear at 60mph instead of 70 before.  I'm glad I did the install.

LRebel, Baker Trans has a 31 and 30 tooth sprocket, 32 being stock, for the front. Each tooth will lower the ratio about 3%. If you go 1 tooth ,you will not need to change the belt, 2 teeth needs a shorter drive belt. The new sprockets are about $200.

And add to that $500 to reinstall and get a new belt too.

No, I left the pulleys stock.  At 70mph I'm tacking 2600; at 75, I'm at 2800.  I don't want to go back to the 3000 plus cruising rpm that I had with the five speed.

AJ, don't ever say those words together.  Not ever.

Even the merest hint of that word that means no cost together with HD is enough to open primordial forces of the universe.  A hellmouth (no, not Roseanne Barr or Rosie O'Donnell, we're talking real satanic chit here) perhaps.  Demons.  Spectral IRS agents from Capone's generation.  And other seriously bad stuff.

HD and fr....; and that word shall NEVER be spoken together.  Hell, we're lucky they've just never thought of pay toilets and extra value Screamin Eagle Toilet Paper in the dealership stalls.  You can take your own life in your hands by threatening Karma like that man.  But don't bring it down on the rest of us.

Yes there was. The install special is for a very specific period of time and is only available by calling in advance to Chief's Bike Works. You know the number.

AJ, that Chief's Bike Works place has a great reputation (albeit accompanied by an OSHA violation having something to do with a stairway).  The rates certainly sound reasonable enough.  Though it sounds like they're a stickler for scheduling....
