I couldn't locate anything that says a motorcycle can be/should be backed into a curb spot.  Only the parallel parking description below is on the D.C. DMV location.

Rjob749,

Thanks for the help and info.  I used what you found in my written denial I sent today.  I will post the results when I hear back.

Maybe it's a revenue thing, making bikes pay individually rather than multiples in same spot?  :nixweiss: I know a lot of cities around the bay area will ticket you if you're not backed into the spot and your rear wheel touching the curb. This can be an issue if there is an odd curb and is a hazard to your pipes, lower rear fender area, etc. Seems like we can't win!  :soapbox:

Add to that then you piss of cagers because you've taken up more spots instead of putting several bikes in one spot. Have the authorities pissed at you on one hand, and "Joe Blow" in his cage pissed at you in the other hand. Doesn't make sense we can't win. >:(

There is NO doubt that parking and traffic enforcement in DC is all about revenue.  In addition to an army of meter maids in a city without adequate parking, they have photo traffic enforcement.  Strangely, the cameras are not in residential areas where safety is an issue, but on commuter roads where they can get thousands of people from out of town commuting into work.  Each one of those cameras generates millions in revenue per year.

In the Beautiful downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas on the side of the road you have to feed the parking meters,  they will however let you park as many bikes in one spot without saying anything to you.  The only thing is DON'T be the one parked by the meter because you'll will be the one with the TICKET.
Don't ask me how I know this...... >:(

Looking forward to their reply.  At best, if the motorcycle handbook has different informaton from the driver's license handbook, then it's vague and ambiguous which should make the law unenforcable.  Keep us posted. :nixweiss:

Still no reply from the DC government on my appeal.

One of my friends has received an increased fine notice for not paying his, I have not.  I am hoping that means they received the appeal and it is in the works.....It is the DC government so you never, ever, know what might happen.    :confused5:

I will post when I find out the answer.

We had this issue come up many years ago in Old Orchard Beach Maine. The cops were trying to rid the town of bikers, so this was one way they harassed us. What we did (we being United Bikers of Maine) was organize several hundred bikers to park one bike in each parking spot parallel to the curb. We got there at 6AM and stayed all day, feeding the meters when necessary. There wasn't a single available parking spot for a car outside of the public parking lot. We made it clear we would do it every weekend as long as necessary for the cops to back down. The town got the message and painted bike parking slots diagonal to the curb in groups of four in about 20 places around town.

Peaceful resistance works sometimes

It might be cool to see this type of resistance start doing that in the district for two whole months, every weekend up to Rolling Thunder.  As it is, no car can go into the tourist area of DC Rolling Thunder Weekend.  There is not a lot of parking anyway, but if you take up what little there is with bikes, makes for unhappy tourists.  Unhappy tourists is not a good thing in our Nation's Capital.

Parking a bike parallel to the curb is a safety hazard, most municipalities know this and have exemptions for motorcycles.

Roads are graded for drainage, center higher, curb lower... you put a bike parallel to the curb and then set it on a side stand, it will be sitting 3 or 4 inches higher than on no grade.

It will be a newbie that wrote it.... "just tryin to fill my quota boss"!

About a year ago we were in Calistoga, CA we found a nice parking space along the main street.  Now the parking spaces were angled to match the direction of travel so I pulled in, right up to the curb, and parked in the middle of the space.  We went in had a bite to eat and when we came back out the Meter Maid was there, getting ready to write me a ticket.  I asked him why, he said, in CA a MC is required to back into a space, rear wheel touching the curb & park that way.

I said, so this parking space is angled to match the flow of traffic, it is slightly uphill, I would have to trun, pull into the middle of the street, roll the bike uphill into a space.  Then when I go to leave pull out facing into traffic, make a hard right hand turn to continue down the street in the correct direction because it is a double yellow line in the center of the street.

He looked at me and then again said, in Ca a MC is required.......  I pulled out a pen & paper, wrote down his name & ID, then I showed him my LEO ID and asked him if he wanted to persue this? If so did he want me to call and ask for his supervisor to come out.  End of discussion...

Moral of this story... no common sense in some people.  Now you could argue that if that is the CA law then you should not park in an available place if you cannot meet the back in, rear tire against the curb law.
